Vitoria v Santa Cruz – Barradão at 20:00

There are seven fixtures in Serie A on Sunday afternoon and evening but we’ll be taking a look at the fixture between Vitoria and Santa Cruz.

This is a huge fixture for both clubs with Vitoria aiming to pull away from the relegation zone knowing that three points will potentially put them in mid table whilst Santa Cruz who can’t buy a win at the moment know that three points is crucial in their bid to avoid relegation.

With no win in five competitive games for Santa Cruz their situation is becoming somewhat desperate as they’re starting to become adrift in the bottom four. Santa’s last defeat will have hurt them the most as the bossed the first half an hour against a solid Sao Paulo side before falling in the 39th minute. Another goal for SP in the 65th minute all but sealed the three points for the away side and left Santa Cruz in 19th position.

Santa’s last win came against a terrible America MG side that are destined to finish bottom this campaign. Although Santa came out 0-3 winners the scoreline certainly flattened them as Arthur and Tiago Costa scored potentially goal of the season contenders as Santa scored with every shot on target that they had. Santa Cruz are in a difficult position now undecided if they should set up and play for a draw or do they go gung ho in an attempt to take all three points.

Vitoria haven’t played badly in their previous three games but they have just three points to show for their efforts and no clean sheets since July 10th when they drew 0-0 at home to Fluminense. A point wouldn’t be a terrible result for Vitoria but I think they’ll fancy their chances of getting all three provided they keep Santa forward Grafite quiet.

I’m expecting Vitoria to allow Santa Cruz to have the ball in the early stages as they try to draw them out of their deep shape. This could result in Vitoria defending for the opening 20 minutes of the game, once Santa have been pulled out of their shape and start to attack Vitoria then I’m expecting Vitoria to push Flavio and Welison forward to make a 4-3-3 with Kieza as a spearhead.

I like the price on Vitoria to come away with a win especially with Santa Cruz’s recent away form!
