The Barclays Betting Preview – Thursday 27th August by @BannersBets

The Barclays – Plainfield CC New Jersey, live from 19:00 on Sky Sports 4

The FedEx Cup Playoffs get underway on Thursday and the Barclays kicks the series off as it has done since the playoffs inception in 2007. The field is made up of the top 125 players in FedEx Cup point standings, and they will be competing for a total prize fund of $8,500,000 of which the winner will receive $1,485,000. Next week’s Deutsche Bank Championship field consists of just 100 players, and consequently the bottom 25 players in the FedEx Standings at the end of this event will miss out on the remainder of the series.

This year, the Barclays returns to Plainfield Country Club which hosted this event in 2011. The course is located in Plainfield, New Jersey and Dustin Johnson won this tournament the last time it was staged at this venue. The course was designed by Donald Ross in 1916, and has since been renovated by Gil Hanse. The renovation resulted in the removal of over 1,200 trees, the expansion of 16 greens and lengthening of 12 holes. Plainfield is a par 70 that now plays 7,030 yards which is relatively short and despite Dustin Johnson winning here in 2011, many accurate drivers of the ball featured in the top ten. A good week with the wedge in hand will be the key to success around Plainfield County Club and we should expect some very low scores around this easy track.

Recommended Bets

Brandt Snedeker – Seven time PGA Tour winner, Brandt Snedeker is generously priced at 50/1 this week. He’s had a pretty good season so far, recording eight top 10 finishes, and this includes a victory in the low scoring AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. He has since finished 2nd in the Crowne Plaza Invitational, 8th in the US Open, and more recently 12th in the PGA Championship. Last week Snedeker finished 43rd in the Wyndham Championship, but this doesn’t tell the full story. He shot a second round of 61 and was in contention going into the final round, which suggests he’s playing well at present.

Zach Johnson – Recent major winner, Zach Johnson should go well this week around Plainfield Country Club. The American has now won 12 times on the PGA Tour and a course that measures just 7,030 yards should suit his game. He’s one of the best players in the world with a wedge and he’s proved on numerous occasions that he can shoot the low scores that will be required this week. Finally, I’m not sure you’ll see many better prices than Zach Johnson’s price this week, I rated the two time major winner at 40/1.

1.5pts each way @ 66/1

Ben Martin – At the start of the season, Ben Martin recorded his maiden PGA Tour victory in the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open and he’s continued to impress throughout the year. He finished inside the top 10 on five occasions, including a 4th place finish in the Players Championship. Admittedly, Martin has struggled over the past couple of months but a strong showing in last week’s Wyndham Championship indicates he’s playing well once again. He finished in 10th position and hit an impressive 84.72% of greens in regulation.
