Milan v Roma Asian Handicap Preview – Sunday 7th May by @MarkOHaire

AC Milan v AS Roma – San Siro at 19:45 live at BT Sport

Roma arrived at Sunday’s Rome derby with city rivals Lazio with faint Serie A title hopes still alive. Juventus’ draw with Atalanta on Friday had opened the door for them to close to within six points of the league leaders – who they still have to host next month.

The Giallorossi were in form, too, having W7-D1-L0 as they kicked out of a March slump. With a four-point advantage over third-place Napoli following a thrashing Pescara, the Wolves were in pole position to secure the second automatic Champions League qualification position but they wanted more.

What followed was deeply disappointing. Roma were well beaten by their bitter neighbours at the Stadio Olimpico and the loss felt like the end of an era.

Spalletti, having brought such optimism when he returned to the club last January, has fallen short of his stated goal of winning a trophy this season. He suggested he’d leave should he fail to win a trophy and it does appear that the club are preparing to start over.

Monchi’s appointment as sporting director has been confirmed, and already he has been linked with a move to bring his former Sevilla colleague Unai Emery in as manager. Legendary Francesco Totti seems likely to finally hang up his boots as the Giallorossi squad is expected to undergo a significant overhaul.

Napoli have since closed the gap to a solitary point and now Roma must pick themselves up for another major test at the San Siro. Whilst the Wolves’ home form has been a revelation, the visitors haven’t always produced the goods in game as guests, leaving them vulnerable here.

Roma have been ousted from the Coppa Italia semi-finals by Lazio, out-played by Lyon in France and managed just W4-D1-L5 at clubs in 13го and above when on their travels this term. It’s a record that makes the Giallorossi easily opposable for Sunday night’s visit to Milan.

AC may have won just once in five outings and were held to a draw at relegation-scrappers Crotone last time out but Vincenzo Montella’s men currently occupy the final European qualification berth and the Rossoneri faithful are keen to return to continental football next season.

Despite their poor recent run of victories, Milan are still providing stern opposition and have suffered only two defeats in 12, one of which came against table-topping Juventus.

AC have been beaten on only four occasions at the San Siro this season so whilst

Montella’s youthful squad often lack the punch required to down high-flying opponents, they do possess the tools to frustrate and odds of 1.83 on Milan with a +0.50 start on the Asian handicap line are a little on the large side.

The Rossoneri have scored more than once in just five of their last 19 matches but their mean defensive efforts have ensured only Juventus and Roma have shipped fewer goals this term and I’d fancy the hosts to avoid defeat when going toe-to-toe with the Giallorossi.

Asian Handicap Recommendation: AC Milan +0.50 Asian Handicap (1.83)
