Man Utd v Tottenham – Old Trafford at 12:45 live on BT Sport 1
After what seem’s to have been an eternity, the Premier League is back this weekend and it’s Man Utd who kick off the season once again, this time against Tottenham. The Red Devil’s go into the match as strong favourites at 1.67 despite finishing just 1 place and 6 points above Spurs at the end of 2014/15.
Utd opened last season with a 2-1 defeat to Swansea in Louis Van Gaal’s first league match and he’ll be hoping for a better start this time. He achieved what was expected, a top 4 finish, last year despite a poor start and mediocre performances throughout the first half of the season.
Their home record was very impressive winning 14 of their 19 matches, losing just 3 times. Another imposing statistic is that 10 of their 14 wins were by 2 or more goals at Old Trafford, including a 3-0 win over Tottenham in March, one of their best displays of the season. You can back Utd -1 on the Asian Handicap betting market at 2.12 which looks to be a bit of value.
LVG has splashed the cash again this year bringing in the likes of Schweinsteiger, Schneiderlin to strengthen up the centre of his midfield as well as a much need full back in the shape of Matteo Darmian. Angel Di Maria has been absent for Utd’s pre-season and his move to PSG is imminent but new signing Memphis Depay has looked sharp in the summer friendlies and is definitely one to look out for. They may need another couple of signings, a striker and a centre half perhaps, but their squad is looking strong.
An improved league position, making it to the knock-out stages of the Champions League and maybe a trophy has to be their goals for 2015/16.
Tottenham had what was a typical season for them last term, pushing for a top 4 spot until the business end then fell away to finish outside the UCL spots once again.
Mauricio Pochettino, like LVG, will commence his second season in charge this Saturday but his focus seems to have been getting rid of player this summer rather than bringing them in. Paulinho, Capoue, Stambouli and Kaboul are just a few names to have left the Lane and reports suggest Soldado and Adebayor are not too far behind.
Wimmer, Alderweireld and Trippier will strengthen things up at the back but their only recognised striker is Harry Kane. There will be a lot of pressure on the young England international after an excellent season last year but Spurs will surely need more attacking options if they are to break into the top 4.
They are still some distance from their goal of qualifying for the Champions League and I think will struggle this season to even finish in the top 6.
The Over 2.5 goals price of 1.86 looks appealing considering 68% of Utd’s matches at Old Trafford and 79% of Tottenham’s matches on the road saw 3 or more goals last season.
Another odds against value bet is to back Man Utd -0.5 on the first half Asian Handicap betting market at 2.28, something they achieved in 12 of their 19 matches at home last season. This will be my first recommendation of the season.
Asian Handicap Betting Recommendation: Man Utd -0.5 First Half @ 2.28
