Liverpool v Chelsea Asian Total Goals Preview – 14th August Wednesday

Liverpool v Chelsea – BJK Vodafone Park at 20:00 GMT+1 Live at BT Sport

For the first time in UEFA Super Cup history, an all-Premier League tie will take place on Wednesday night at Istanbul’s Besiktas Park as Liverpool lock horns with Chelsea. The Reds won the Champions League for the sixth time in their history last season, and are hoping to claim this trophy for the fourth time.

Having opened their domestic campaign with a Community Shield defeat on penalties to Manchester City, Jurgen Klopp’s charges bounced back to clinch a 4-1 league success over Norwich on Friday night and arrive in Turkey as hot favourites. A clinical display saw Liverpool leading by four goals at the interval.

In contrast, Chelsea were beaten 4-0 at Old Trafford when travelling to Manchester United on Sunday. Frank Lampard’s troops were arguably the stronger side in the opening 45 minutes, although profligacy proved the Blues undoing as United took their own opportunities in front of goal after the break.

Chelsea may not have been able to register in their opening encounter, but it was clear that Lampard is setting his team up in a forward-thinking and attacking manner. Mason Mount, Ross Barkley and Pedro were all sent out in support of Tammy Abraham, to follow on from an entertaining pre-season program.

Goals on the agenda

It remains to be seen if the new Blues boss will take a more restrained approach in future, particularly against a Liverpool side geared to get forward and punish any extra space in the transitions. Nevertheless, recent trends in Liverpool and Chelsea meetings point towards another high-scoring contest in Istanbul.

Since May 2012, all bar four of the past 19 head-to-head meetings have seen both sides score, including seven of nine showdowns since Klopp arrived on Merseyside. With the Super Cup deemed a glamour friendly from the outside, it’s encouraging that six of the past seven editions also saw both sides find the net, while five of those seven games featured a minimum of four goals.

Such figures make the 1.70 available for Over 2.5 Goals a little too big to turn down. Friday night viewers will have noticed that Liverpool were far from watertight defensively against Norwich, and with regular goalkeeper Alisson unavailable this midweek, Chelsea should be capable of causing concern.

There’s no doubt Liverpool deserve their pre-match favourites tag; all but one of the past six Super Cups have been won by the side that lifted the Champions League. However, the Reds are just a little too skinny to support at sub 1.70, considering there’s no major silverware on the line for the Merseysiders. With that in mind, a straight play on the goals market is preferred.
