Dortmund v Augsburg Asian Handicap Preview – 17th August Sunday

Borussia Dortmund v Augsburg – Signal Iduna Park at 14:30 GMT +1

A nightmare collapse from February saw Dortmund’s surprisingly strong Bundesliga challenge fall at the final hurdle by two points last season but Die Schwarzgelben have made no secret of their desire for a sustained and serious tilt at the title this term. CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke declared as much in May.

BVB felt they must keep hold of their star assets this summer, strengthen in areas of potential weakness, bulk out the squad to add cover and depth, and switch their mindset towards a more ruthless attitude. Looking at the club’s business, they’ve certainly given themselves a great chance of further progress.

Nico Schulz was arguably transformed into the best German left-back in the league by Julian Nagelsmann, and should enhance that reputation after joining from Hoffenheim. Former Gladbach winger Thorgan Hazard has produced 20 goals and 15 assists in the last two Bundesliga campaigns, while Julian Brandt was transformed as a creative midfielder for Leverkusen last season.

The return of Mats Hummels will provide much-needed experience in defence, and the hope is that Dortmund will stop giving away the kind of cheap goals that ultimately cost them the title in 2018/9. Elsewhere, standout stars Jadon Sancho and Marco Reus remain in situ, whilst Paco Alcacer is finally fit and firing.

Dortmund to deliver cushy home success

Coach Lucien Favre is yet to taste Bundesliga title triumph before but his lightning-fast counter-attacking game has already produced some thrilling results and the time might just be right for Dortmund to take the next step. Die Schwarzgelben should at least get their campaign off to a cushy home success.

The Westfalenstadion outfit recorded W14-D2-L1 when hosting league opposition in Favre’s first season at the club, scoring at least two goals in every game. BVB bagged three or more goals in 10 of those 17 tussles and beat their visitors by at least a two-goal margin on seven occasions at home.

Saturday afternoon’s guests Augsburg gave Dortmund two tricky tests last season, although the Fuggerstädter could struggle to match those exploits this time around. Martin Schmidt’s men suffered an embarrassing DFB Pokal exit last weekend and could pay for their recent years of overachievement this term.

Augsburg were beaten in exactly half of their Bundesliga outings in 2018/19, averaging over two goals per-game against throughout the campaign. The visitors returned a -21 goal difference on their travels and look likely to suffer more pain when pitching up in North Rhine-Westphalia this weekend.
