Real Sociedad v Villareal – Betting Preview

Anoeta Stadium – Wednesday 14th January at 19:00 live on Sky Sports 1

Real Sociedad host Villareal tonight in what should be one of the more competitive ties from the 2nd legs of the last 16 of the Copa Del Rey. Sociedad trail 1-0 from the first leg at the Estadio El Madrigal as they couldn’t carry their momentum from the league win over Barcelona a few days prior to facing Villareal. David Moyes will be looking to overturn that deficit this evening and advance to the next round to help boost some confidence into his team who have under performed so far this season.

Sociedad finished 7th last season in La Liga, but now sit 12th in the league at almost the half way stage just 3 points off the bottom three. At home this season, the Basque side have beaten Real Madrid and Barcelona but seem to come unstuck against lesser sides. David Moyes, who has never won any silverware in his 16 year career as manager has said this week that he would love to get to the Copa Del Rey final but with the threat of relegation, La Liga must be their main priority. I expect a strong Soceidad side to be named this evening, Agirretxe could start with Moyes saying he’s getting fitter all the time and expects him to be able to play 60 minutes. La Real lack power going forward and don’t create enough chances but this will need to be the focus tonight if they are to progress to the quarter finals.

Villareal play very similarly home and away but it’s away where they have amassed most of their league points this season. They are 7th in La Liga and have only lost once away from home all season. In their last 2 league matches however, they have only managed a point from each after taking the lead in both games. El Submarino Amarillo have scored in each of their last 8 matches, if they can keep that record up it is hard to see Sociedad scoring enough to knock Villareal out of the competition.

I don’t think this tie will produce too many goals, Under 2.5 is priced @ 1.84 which is tempting. My recommendation though, is to back Villareal 0 (Draw No Bet) @ 1.88.

Prices correct at time of writing.
