Highly regarded in the English football world at present, Ryan Sessegnon simply began his football career at Fulham’s under-nine team, spending his entire youth career with the club. In August 2016, he made his first-team debut in an EFL Cup fixture alongside Leyton Orient. Four days after making his debut with the team, he netted his first professional goal in a league fixture against Cardiff City, becoming the youngest player to ever score during a championship match. Furthermore, he was the one who scored the match-winning goal during the FA Cup in a match also against Cardiff, while he also became one of the youngest goal scorers in the history of the Football Association Challenge Cup. He was even regarded by legendary Alan Shearer as “brilliant.” Sessegnon was also the youngest player to be included in the PFA Championship Team of the Year.
He attracted the attention of several media outfits and veteran players alike as his debut season developed. Fulham striker Neeskens Kebano even called him ‘the Future of English football.” His outstanding performance also caught the interest of several Premier League clubs such as Everton, Liverpool, Manchester United, as well as Bundesliga teams Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig. In June 2017, he announced his stay in Fulham, signing his first professional contract with the club.
He scored his first goal of the 2017-18 season during a 1-1 draw against Cardiff. In November 2017, Sessegnon was among the players included in the 100 Best Teenagers in the World list by football magazine FourFourTwo. In the same month, he marked his 50th appearance for the club by netting his first ever professional hat-trick that helped secure Fulham’s 5-4 away victory over Sheffield United, becoming the first seventeen-year-old player to notch a hat-trick in the top four levels of the English Football League since Dele Alli in the year 2014.
His stunning performance was praised and he was name PFA and Championship Player of the Month. In February 2018, he placed tenth in the most promising under 20 prospects in all of Europe, featuring also in a prestigious list by CIES along with Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappe.
He finished the season with another PFA Young Player of the Year, becoming the first Championship player to be nominated for the award. In April 2018, he bagged an unparalleled five awards when he was named as the Championship Player of the Season, Young Player of the Season, Apprentice of the Year, and was included in the Team of the Season and EFL Club Developed XI. He finished the season assisting Fulham when he scored the opening goal and set up the match-winning goal in a semi-final match against Derby County to place in the third spot which helped them progress to the play-offs.
At present, Ryan Sessegnon has made Premier League history by becoming the first player born in the 21st century to net a landmark goal in the English top flight competition. With his agility, consistency and creativity, he could be handed the opportunity on the international level very soon.
