MLS Asian Handicap Match Previews – 31st August Saturday

San Jose Earthquakes v Orlando City

It looked like San Jose were maybe heading down a spiral again after losing three games in a row. But they bounced back really well by beating Vancouver 3-1 last week. Ok, a home victory against the Western Conference bottom team is nothing to write home about but the Quakes amassed a huge 43 shots in that match! On another day they could’ve scored 6 or 7 goals such was their dominance. For the most part San Jose have been brilliant in the last few months both in terms of results and performances. The manager deserves great praise for the hard work put in. Nobody expected them to challenge for the playoffs this season but it’s a realistic possibility now and the Quakes could even be considered a dark horse for overall MLS Cup glory.

This weekend an Orlando outfit travel out west where I expect it will be a difficult encounter for the Floridians. OC are quite an inconsistent side who can be anything on their day but the Earthquakes are rightful short priced favourites on a -1.25 Asian Handicap. This is the pick I really like for this match. San Jose have a great home record if you exclude their early results this season. I’m very confident they will at least win the match the only real question is by how many. It would be annoying if the margin of victory was just one goal but the way they have been dominating at home this season suggests to me that this could be a comfortable success. Perhaps the most remarkable statistic about Orlando recently is the fact that their last six MLS matches have all ended under 2.5 goals. In such a high scoring league then this is a big surprise. A 2-0 score line could therefore be the most likely outcome and it is definitely the home Handicap which interests me most.

Asian Handicap Betting Recommendation: San Jose Earthquakes -1.25 at 1.900

Sporting Kansas City v Houston Dynamo

Successive victories at home to San Jose and Minnesota have pushed SKC back into playoff contention. They are still 6 points adrift of seventh spot but there are enough games left for Sporting to get into the post season. For the most part it’s been a very challenging campaign full of injuries and inconsistent form. The lack of a proper striker still hinders this team. Recently they’ve been going with Eric Hurtado upfront and he’s been in surprisingly good form. He’s usually not the most reliable attacker though and SKC will continue to need goals from midfield areas. Alternatively, going back to basics and conceding less goals would also help their cause. A 1-0 win vs Minnesota last week was almost the old style SKC which was renowned for clean sheets.

One thing they can’t afford to do is slip up in a home match vs Houston Dynamo. The Texan outfit are in a huge mess, losing 11 of their last 14 MLS matches. Head coach Wilmer Cabrera was fired and currently interim manager Davy Arnaud is in charge. However, things have already started to go pear shaped for him. Houston lost 1-5 away against bitter rivals FC Dallas last weekend which is a result that won’t have gone down very well with their fan base. It was no surprise though. The Dynamo have been horrible on the road this season losing numerous games of football. They seem in a huge mess right now and I’m very happy to bet against them in this fixture. SKC are -0.75 Asian Handicap favourites and this is good enough for me. They should have too much in this clash and register a fairly comfortable success.

Asian Handicap Betting Recommendation: Sporting Kansas City -0.75 at 1.940
