Man Utd v Wigan – Old Trafford at 16:00 live on BBC One
I landed a nice winner yesterday, backing Wolves +1.5 on the Asian Handicap market at 2.10. They defeated Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield, their second Premier League scalp in the FA Cup.
Today I focus my attentions on another Championship side looking to cause another shock in the cup, as Wigan travel to Old Trafford to face Man Utd. I can’t see Wigan following in the footsteps of Wolves, but they have the defensive qualities to avoid embarrassment.
The Red Devils lost their unbeaten run after losing 2-1 to Hull in midweek. Despite the loss, they advanced to the EFL Cup final where there will face Southampton.
After a slow start to the season, Utd have really stepped it up and are now unbeaten in the league in 13 games. Their last defeat came at the end of October against league leaders Chelsea.
They still aren’t quite firing on all cylinders and are still a little goal shy, however, they are picking up more victories and improving all the time.
Man Utd’s next league fixture is against Hull in midweek, which let’s be honest is not a tough match, so a strong starting XI is expected today. Also Mourinho, as we’ve seen from in the EFL Cup, takes cup competitions quite seriously, so he’ll want to go deep in this one.
It’s not bee a great season for the Latics, but they are slowly showing signs of improvement. Having finished last year with 5 losses and a draw, they came into the new year in the bottom three.
The new year started with another defeat, at home to Huddersfield, but have since knocked Nottingham Forrest out of the FA Cup and claimed six points from their last two league games.
Although their form has picked up, a win here is very unlikely. They have faced United 10 times in the last 12 years, losing on every occasions with an aggregate score of 34-1. Damage limitation will be their main focus, to keep their momentum going in the league to avoid relegation.
Asian Handicap & Total Goal
There is only one outcome in this match for me, but I’m not in the habit of backing 1.18 favourites, especially in the cup. Looking at the Asian Handicap, I don’t see much value either.
The line is -2 with Utd priced up at 1.83. They have improved a lot recently, but from their 11 home matches this season, they have only managed to score more than twice on two occasions. One of those times was against Reading in the last round, but Wigan are a better side defensively.
The Latics have the 8th best defensive record in the Championship and should be set up to play to their strengths today.
At the other end of the park, Wigan struggle though. They are currently the lowest scorers in the league.
I don’t see Wigan contributing to the goals here, so it’s just a question of how many Utd will score. I don’t think that many!
Under 3 goals is priced up at a big looking 2.13 which I make a really good value bet.
Asian Handicap Recommendation: Under 3 goals at 2.13
