EFL Cup Asian Handicap Previews – Tuesday 22nd August

Ipswich Town v Crystal Palace

Life under Frank De Boer has not exactly got off to a perfect start for Crystal Palace and fans will be starting to wonder whether his ill-fated spell at Inter Milan was not just a one-off. An opening day humiliation against newly promoted Huddersfield was followed up by an away loss at Anfield against Liverpool.

A cup competition against a lower league opposition would usually be the perfect opportunity to boost morale, but it could prove to be an eye opener for the Dutch boss.

Ipswich Town is a well-drilled side under Irishman Mick McCarthy and has won all four of their Championship matches so far this season. McCarthy will be delighted with how his side has started the season and will want to continue that when they welcome Palace to Portman Road on Tuesday evening.

With the likes of Joe Garner, David McGoldrick and Martyn Waghorn all looking dangerous so far this season, De Boer will be hoping his Palace players can step up to the plate.

This may be De Boer’s epiphany – when he realizes that his Palace side may not be good enough to play the brand of football he wants to instill.

Asian Handicap Betting Recommendation: Ipswich 0.75 at 3.040

Cardiff City v Burton Albion

When these two sides met on the opening day of the Championship season, the side was evenly matched and it took a Kenneth Zahore wondergoal to break the deadlock and take all three points for Warnock’s Cardiff.

Now the sides meet again in the EFL Cup and fortunes have certainly changed. Cardiff is flying under Warnock, four wins from four in the league and just the single goal conceded. For Burton, they’ve won just one out of their four Championship matches so far and it looks like another season of struggle ahead for Nigel Clough’s men.

Warnock’s Cardiff squad are relatively thin on the ground, so expect him to make changes to keep things fresh. New signing Omar Bogle may come in for Kenneth Zahore to give the star man a rest, whilst the likes of Danny Ward, Matthew Kennedy, and Lee Tomlin may come back into the side.

For Clough’s Burton, he’ll be hoping that they can build on the weekend’s win against Birmingham City, but will be well aware that his side is facing a Cardiff team on a hot-streak.

Asian Handicap Betting Recommendation: Cardiff City – 1.25 at 2.290

Birmingham City v AFC Bournemouth

The big story in this Championship v Premier League clash is Birmingham boss Harry Redknapp facing his former club. Redknapp began his managerial career at the south-coast club, joining in 1983 before leaving for West Ham United in 1994. He’s remembered fondly by the Bournemouth fans and I’m sure he’ll get a warm reception on Tuesday.

On the pitch, Birmingham hasn’t had the best start to the season, registering just one win in their four games in the league so far. They did beat Crawley Town emphatically in the last round, but Redknapp will know that Bournemouth is a different kettle of fish.

Eddie Howe’s side is without a win in the Premier League so far; losing to West Brom and Watford. The talented boss will know that this is the perfect opportunity for his men to find their form.

Asian Handicap Betting Recommendation: Bournemouth -0.50 at 2.170
