Champions League Match Previews – 27th November Tuesday

Juventus v Valencia

Juventus are currently on the hunt to secure a place in the last 16 of the Champions League on Tuesday night as they welcome Valencia after a frustrating late setback on matchday four.  However, a win, even a draw, against Valencia would be enough to secure their spot in the 16th round. The Italian outfit managed to bounce back from their unexpected defeat against Manchester United and they remain in the top of the table in the Group H despite the loss.

Juventus will be hosting Valencia who can’t also afford a loss if they also want to secure a place in the last 16, but as of now, it’s quite challenging to see the Spanish side making their way to the next round following their poor start to the campaign. After dominating in the Serie A title race, their hope of scaling into new heights comes in the Champions League tournament after more than two decades of not winning the trophy.

The Italian side will come into this match newly recovered from their home turf loss against United by winning 2-0 in a fixture against AC Milan. Their record of 37 points is by far the highest in the Serie A in 13 games. They saw their winning start come to an ended when they shared a 1-1 draw against Genoa , the only Serie A fixture they were unsuccessful in becoming triumphant since May. They also managed to win against Valencia even without Cristiano Ronaldo. On the other hand, Valencia only lost once in 13 of their previous fixtures to Juventus and they current have a tally of 17 points in 13 games. As of now, the Spanish side currently sits in the 10th place after their victory against Rayo Vallecano.

Lyon v Manchester City

Manchester City made a very strong recovery from matchday one’s shocking home loss to Lyon at the Etihad Stadium. On Tuesday, they will be travelling to France quite hungry for a rematch to top the Group F standings even though Lyon are currently having a good run to advance to the 16th round of the Champions League.

Lyon is currently in a satisfactory form at the moment. They are currently undefeated since their 5-0 thrashing against Paris Saint-Germain back in October, their greatest downfall since their 6-1 setback against Nantes in February 2000. They have lost just once in their previous 14 matches across all competitions as of now and none of it was from the Champions League fixtures.

On the other hand, Manchester City managed to fight back from that defeat to come out triumphant in every Champions League group fixture since. This resulted in bringing them back to their expected position at the top of the Group F standings and a victory in this match will surely secure their top spot and allow them to have a break on matchday six. Their defeat against Lyon remains to be their only loss of the season throughout the competition, winning 12 of their 13 league fixtures since then. Their most recent victory was when they thrashed West Ham in a 4-0 win which upped their tally to an impressive 59 goals in 20 games.

On Tuesday, they will be facing the Ligue 1 side that also doesn’t shy away from some goal action of their own. As a matter of fact, the French outfit was able to claim three or more goals in 10 of their previous 14 competitive fixtures which include 4 of their Champions League matches.

Roma v Real Madrid

Real Madrid will be travelling to Roma for a match that will likely decide who among these two will top the Champions League Group G standings. Both of these clubs are highly likely to progress to the last 16 of the competition. The Spanish outfit are narrowly ahead on their head-to-head record after their 3-0 domination against the Italian side during the opening match. The hosts will surely come into this match quite unforgiving since a win will secure their place in the last 16 and will help them claim the top spot.

The only threat to these two sides’ progress are CSKA Moscow, who are one of the favourites to win at home against Viktoria Plzen in one of Tuesday’s two early fixtures. Real Madrid’s shocking defeat to CSKA Moscow paved the way for the Serie A side to claim the top spot in the group with the two side levelled as they enter gameweek five. Santiago Solari lost his first match as Madrid’s boss during an upsetting 3-0 defeat to Eibar last Saturday which left them at the sixth place in the La Liga.

Meanwhile, Roma managed to come out victorious in their previous seven home Champions League fixtures. They kept a clean sheet in six of those matches while also netting 20 goals. That remarkably impressive record secured them a place in the semifinals and led to wins against Barcelona, Chelsea, and Liverpool. They’ve been making a decent home run lately, losing just once in eight of their previous games. This will be the 12th encounter between the two sides with Real Madrid coming out successful in seven of those and Roma with three. However, with Roma’s current performance, they may also cause quite a shock on Tuesday’s fixture.
