Travelers Championship – TPC River Highlands at 20:30 live on Sky Sports 4
After an enthralling U.S. Open in Washington, the PGA Tour heads east to Connecticut for the 64th renewal of the Travelers Championship. This event takes place the week after the second major championship of the year, for a ninth consecutive year. Interestingly, four of the last five winners of the Travelers Championship, either missed the cut or didn’t play in the U.S Open, this indicating that fatigue maybe a factor. Despite this, the field is a relatively strong one and Bubba Watson, who has an excellent record around this week’s venue, is the bookies favourite.
TPC River Highlands, plays host to the Travelers Championship, as it has done since 1984. The course is a par 70 that plays 6,841 yards, it consists of twelve par 4’s, four par 3’s and two par 5’s, and as is the case with most par 70 tracks, par four performance is crucial. The Pete Dye designed venue is one of the easiest on the PGA Tour, 19 year old Patrick Cantlay shot 60 around TPC River Highlands in 2011 and multiple players have shot 61. The ability to go low and make a lot of birdies is invaluable this week, therefore the birdie average statistic is one to look out for when placing your bets.
Justin Thomas – Justin Thomas has excelled throughout his first full season on the PGA Tour, he’s already finished inside the top ten on five occasions and he has the ability to shoot the low scores required this week. The young American has averaged 4.15 birdies a round this season and is ranked 10th on the PGA Tour in this crucial statistic. Back in 2013, as an amateur, Thomas got an invite to this event and was 14th going into the final round, admittedly a poor Sunday led to a 30th place finish, however it does indicate that Thomas can perform well around TPC River Highlands.
2pts each way @ 40/1
Russell Knox – Russell Knox is yet to win on the PGA Tour but a victory is not far away in my opinion. He has finished in third position on two occasions this season and comes into this event in excellent form. The Scotsman has finished inside the top 25 in each of his last three starts and that includes a tie for 8th place in his most recent outing. This week’s venue, TPC River Highlands, is one Knox should perform well around, he tied for 13th around this track in 2013 and is ranked 5th on the PGA Tour in par 4 performance.
1.75pts each way @ 50/1
Morgan Hoffman – Last week, Morgan Hoffman closed with a 66 in the US Open, hopefully he can bring some momentum into this event. He is a very talented youngster and he’s recorded a couple of top tens this season and a 27th place finish last week suggests that Morgan’s game is in good shape. Two years ago, Hoffman finished 9th in this event and he is more than capable of shooting low scores. Last season in the BMW Championship, he shot 62 and followed that up with a 63 to finish 3rd! I’m shocked that Morgan Hoffman can be backed at 100/1, he’s a superb bet in my opinion.
