Southampton v Midtjylland – St. Mary’s at 19:45 live on BT Sport Europe
Southampton will look to take a step closer to the group stages of the Europa League tonight as they face Danish champions Midtjylland at St. Mary’s. The Saints will need to rediscover their composure quickly after suffering a 3-0 defeat at home to Everton in the Premier League on Saturday if they are to head to Denmark for the 2nd leg next week with a lead.
Ronald Koeman surprised many people last year, finishing 7th in the league after losing a whole host of big names during the summer. They were challenging for a top 4 finish until around February, but kept at it and fought hard to earn a Europa League qualification spot.
Some big names have left St. Mary’s again this summer, Nathaniel Clyne to Liverpool and Morhan Schneiderlin to Man Utd and I can’t see them repeating last years achievements.
The Saints enjoyed a successful pre-season and 2nd round Europa League qualifier, beating Dutch side Vitesse 5-0 on aggregate. However, their domestic campaign has not got off to the best of starts, firstly with a tough away draw at Newcastle having taken the lead, before losing 3-0 at home to Everton.
Things need to improve to avoid the sharp decline that was expected last year but it’s hard to see them being turned over this evening. Southampton have worked very hard to get to this stage and they have a lot more quality than their opponents. The Saints are at 1.43 and can be backed -1.5 on the Asian Handicap betting market at 2.13.
Midtjylland were formed just 16 years ago and were crowned champions of Denmark for the first time last season. That saw them earn a spot in the 2nd round of the Champions League qualification stages where they defeated Lincoln Red Imps 3-0 over 2 legs.
They faced Cypriot side APOEL in the 3rd round and were unlucky to be knocked out on away goals. They now find themselves looking for a place in Europe’s second tier competition and have been handed one of the toughest draws.
The Wolves have started their domestic season well, winning 4 and drawing one of the first 5 matches and will come into the match full of confidence. However, they’ve been knocked out in the UEL qualifying stages in their last 3 attempts.
Midtjylland are big underdogs (11.5) but you can back them on the Asian Handicap betting market +1.5 at 1.95 if you fancy them to avoid a defeat by 2 or more.
Southampton should win this one but backing the underdogs on the Asian Handicap market is the value bet. For my recommendation however, I’m recommending Over 2.5 goals. The Danes have scored 3 goals in their 2 away matches in Europe, whilst the Saints have conceded 5 in their 2 Premier Matches.
Asian Handicap Betting Recommendation: Over 2.5 goals at 1.82
