Tonight’s Premier League offering see’s David Moyes’ Sunderland host his former side Everton at the Stadium of Light. And despite their customary slow start to the season, the Mackem’s offer some value on the Asian Handicap market.
Sunderland have now gone 22 matches without a league win in August and September. They have been a little unlucky though to have just one point after their opening 3 matches this term.
They were narrowly defeated by Man City 2-1 at the Etihad on matchday 1. An 87th minute Paddy McNair the difference on the day. That was followed by a loss in the Wear-Tees derby, with newly promoted Boro winning 2-1 thanks to a brace from Christian Stuani. Both performances showed improvements from last season, especially in the second half against Middlesbrough.
Sunderland were also unlucky not to take all 3 points against the Saints before the international break. A late Jay Rodriguez goal rescuing a point for Southampton.
David Moyes has had selection problems, most notably in defence. Departures and injuries have left him short but things are starting to turn a corner. Jason Denayer and Javier Manquillo have been brought in and should prove valuable additions to the squad.
A new line-up at the back may take a while to settle in, but things are looking promising for the hosts. They look like a side that have more about them this season and should avoid a scrap at the business end of the campaign.
Everton have started well. They are unbeaten in 3 EPL matches, taking 7 points from a possible 9. The Toffee’s opened with a draw at home to Spurs before narrow wins against WBA and Stoke. It’s fair to say Ronald Koeman has settled in well.
His new signings Idrissa Gueye, Ashley Williams and Maarten Stekelenburg have featured in each match this season, including their 4-0 win over Yeovil in the EFL Cup.
Koeman brought in Yannick Bolasie and Enner Valencia late on to bolster their attacking options and Lukaku remains on Merseyside. A huge positive for the Toffee’s.
On current form, it’s understandable, even away from home, why Everton are the favourites. At 2.19, this doesn’t offer any value especially when you consider their form at the Stadium of Light.
Everton have won just one of their last 7 visits to Sunderland, losing twice, including a 3-0 defeat at the end of last season. Sunderland were 1.78 favourites on that day but come into this match are 3.74 underdogs. Ok, Everton didn’t have a lot to play for, whilst the Black Cats were battling relegation, but it’s still a big underestimation.
The Toffee’s have also managed just 12 goals in 15 matches at the Stadium of Light, but I fancy them getting on the score sheet today. They have a lot of attacking options, with pace and power and are up against a potentially new defence.
