Southampton welcome Man Utd to St. Mary’s this afternoon as Ronald Koeman faces countryman Louis Van Gaal. It’s no secret there is no love lost between the 2 Dutch managers and both will be hoping to take all 3 points today.
The Saints have had a poor start to the season, registering just one win in their opening 5 matches and have failed to score in 3 of those. Goalless draws with Watford and West Brom and a 3-0 defeat to Everton have shown they lack a cutting edge going forward and need to improve if last season is not to be put down as a fluke.
With 6 points from a possible 15, it’s a different story to last season, where they’d picked up 10 at the same stage.
Southampton will hope they can kick start their season with a win over Utd but current form suggests it’s unlikely. They did beat the Red Devils at Old Trafford earlier this year and have a good record of frustrating them, but they don’t fill me with much confidence.
Man Utd’s early performances haven’t filled me with confidence either. 1-0 victories over Spurs and Villa were hard earned but never really in doubt. However, that was followed by a goalless draw with Newcastle and a 2-1 loss at home to Swansea.
Results started to match performances and unrest was reported in the dressing room. Last Saturday’s 3-1 win over Liverpool would have improved morale and confidence but throwing away 3 points in their Champions League return, having gone 1-0 up against PSV, would have brought them back down.
They will be looking to bounce back as they did after their loss to Swansea and although their midweek defeat would have dampened the mood somewhat, their record against the Saints speaks for itself.
With 6 wins from their last 7 visits to the south coast club, Utd enjoy going to St. Mary’s. The Saints have only won 3 times in their last 18 meeting in all competitions and I don’t expect them to add a fourth today.
I make Man Utd great value on the Asian Handicap betting market. They can be backed -0.25 at 2.11 which looks a huge price to me. Southampton have been poor and despite Utd’s less than impressive start to the season, with Rooney expected to be fit, they can close the gap with City to 2 points and continue their winning trend at St. Mary’s.
