Formative Years and Football Career:
Raphael Guerreiro spent his youth career playing for three football clubs, Blanc-Mesnil and the Center Technique National Fernand-Sastre, the famous academy of the French Football Association where he became playmates with Paul Pogba and Raphael Varane. He eventually finished his formation at French club Stade Malherbe Caen after signing with the team in 2008 at just the age 14. He immediately made his professional debut with the club after starting as a senior in the Caen’s reserve team in the fourth division during the 2012-13 season, making an appearance in all 41 of the club’s fixtures in an eventual fourth-place finish in the Ligue 2. He ended his stint with Caen being elected to the Team of the Year.
Portuguese National Team
In 2013, Guerreiro accepted the call to play for Portugal’s under-21 team, making his debut in the senior team the following year later. He was also a vital part of the Portugal side that came out successful at the UEFA Euro 2016 where his outstanding performance earned him a place in the team of the tournament. He was also part of Portugal’s final roster for the 2018 FIFA World Cup despite suffering from multiple injuries during the 2017-18 season.
In June 2013, Guerreiro transferred to Ligue 1 side FC Lorient in a four-year deal. He made his maiden appearance in a Ligue 1 competition, featuring in the full 90 minutes in a 0-1 away defeat against Lille OSC. He finished his first season with Caen scoring ten goals in ten 102 matches, which also helped his team avoid demotion.
In June 2016, Raphael Guerreiro signed a four-year contract with Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund. Being comfortable with the ball at his feet and proficient at finding space, Guerreiro has proven himself to be an integral player for both Portugal and Borussia Dortmund. He even earned the nickname ‘The Battery’ for being tireless on the pitch. He is also regarded as Mr. Versatile for having the ability to play in multiple positions. He plays as an attacking winger, and sometimes even having a considerable number of appearances in a midfield place, though his best position is at left-back.
In his first stellar season with BVB, he netted seven goals and provided an incredible nine assists in all competitions. He finished his first campaign with the club by lifting the DFB Cup following his team’s victory over Eintracht Frankfurt. Following his stellar stint during the 2018 World Cup, all eyes are on him at the beginning of the 2018-19 season. Raphael Guerreiro definitely didn’t disappoint, helping secure the victory of Borussia Dortmund as they cruised past Atletico Madrid in a 4-0 win in the UEFA Champions League last Wednesday.
