Tottenham v Sunderland – White Hart Lane at 12:45 live on BT Sport 1
Tottenham welcome Sunderland to White Hart Lane this Saturday lunchtime looking for their first win of 2016. Sunderland did their survival chances no harm during midweek, beating Swansea 4-2 and will come into this match full of confidence.
Tottenham’s run of 3 matches without a win shouldn’t be a cause of concern for all connected with the club, but failure to win this Saturday and their chances of a top 4 finish would be questioned. Their loss against Leicester in midweek would have hurt but they remain in 4th place and will look at this fixture as one they should and need to win.
Defeat against Leicester was still just their 3rd loss of the season, only the Foxes have fewer league defeats with two, but a win is needed, especially at home. Whilst only Man City and Arsenal have earned more points on home soil, Spurs have won just one of their last 4 matches at the lane.
Wednesday was the first time in 7 games the Lilywhites failed to score but they still rely heavily on Harry Kane who has managed just 2 goals from open play in his last 9 matches in all competitions. Tottenham have just won 2 matches from 14 in which the young England star has failed to find the back of the net, something which may cost them a top 4 spot.
The North Londoners always create plenty of chances, 21 against Leicester, but need to be more clinical. I expect them to have plenty of opportunities against Sunderland and should find a way through the worst defence in the BPL.
Despite the Black Cats win over fellow strugglers Swansea on Wednesday, they still remain 1 point from safety in 18th place. There is no question, it was a huge 3 points for Sunderland and they will be looking for their 3rd straight win on Saturday which should take them out of the bottom 3.
Just as Spurs rely heavily on Kane, Sunderland have been reliant on former Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe. His hat-trick on Wednesday took him up to 9 league goals for the season and have kept the Mackems from slipping further adrift of safety.
Defensively, Sunderland are awful, conceding 41 goals in their 21 games so far this season and they will struggle against the leagues 4th best attack.
Morale will be high in the Sundeland dressing room but their away record is the worst in the league, they have picked up less points on the road than any other team.
The hosts are rightfully favourites, they have won 8 and drawn 3 of their last 11 meetings with Sunderland but with Spurs underachieving of late and the Black Cats on a high, I make Tottenham too short at 1.35.
The value bet for tomorrow is to back Sunderland +1.5 on the Asian Handicap betting market at 1.92.
Asian Handicap Betting Recommendation: Sunderland +1.5 at 1.92
