Sao Paulo v Palmeiras – Cícero Pompeu de Toledo Stadium at 14:00
We’ll be taking a look at the early kick off in the Paulista championship on Sunday when local rivals Sao Paulo and Palmeiras face off. This is historically one of the bigger Paulista games and we have the friendly kick off time of 2pm so we should see a full house for the derby.
Both of these state giants are currently on course to qualify for the play offs with Palmeiras sitting top of their group whilst Sao Paulo occupy second place with eight rounds played in theirs. This should be a tightly fought encounter with neither side giving the other an inch as they both go in search of bragging rights and the points that will all but secure their play off hopes.
Neither of these Sao Paulo state giants will win the Paulista A1 in my opinion this season though as they’re solely focused on success in the Copa Libertedores, the same can be said for Corinthians so I’d be very surprised if Santos didn’t win the Paulista A1 again this season as it’s the clubs best chance of success.
Sao Paulo had the tough task in mid week of playing against last seasons Copa Libertedores champions River Plate from Argentina.The Brazilian side were excellent and came away with a creditable 1-1 draw after a goal, and delightful performance by Neymar’s best friend P.H.Ganso.
Palmieras effectively shot themselves in the foot during their Copa Libertedores campaign as they crashed to a 2-1 home defeat to Nacional, Palmeiras went off at 1.44 so to lose the game is nothing short of a disaster for the club.
This will be a very close game especially with both sides still recovering from their earlier mid week exploits. With this being an early kick off you’ll be able to understand the low intensity set by both sides.
