Sampdoria v Cagliari Asian Handicap Preview – 24th February Sunday

Sampdoria v Cagliari – Luigi Ferraris at 11:30 GMT live at Premier Sport

Sampdoria head coach Marco Giampaolo believes his team “certainly did not deserve to lose” 2-1 to Inter Milan last weekend with the Blucerchiati boss “particularly angry” with the referees performance at San Siro.

Samp had cancelled out Danilo D’Ambrosio’s opener with a Manolo Gabbiadini strike, but Radja Nainggolan fired in the winner from the edge of the box shortly after to send Giampaolo’s group to a third successive Serie A defeat.

The Blucerchiati were beaten 0.76 to 1.77 in the Expected Goals (xG) battle but only lost the shot count 13-16. The result came hot on the heels of an embarrassing 1-0 home defeat to struggling Frosinone where the visitors managed only three attempts at goal, one of which was on-target.

Nevertheless, Sampdoria have proven handy operators at their Marassi base and can be supported at 1.92 to get back in the Winners Enclosure in Sunday’s early kick-off against Cagliari. Under Giampaolo, the Blucerchiati have bagged 26/49 (53%) home victories in Serie A, scoring at least twice in 26 encounters.

When welcoming bottom-half teams to the Marassi, Samp have W17-D7-L3 and even without the suspended Karol Linetty, the hosts look well worth backing to return to winning ways this weekend.

Cagliari’s rotten road record

Cagliari head coach Rolando Maran earned a stay of execution after guiding the Sardinians to a much-needed 2-1 win over Parma last time out. Having been beaten in six of eight previous outings, the Rossoblu had plummeted to just three points above the drop zone.

However, that vital victory has eased pressure on the former Chievo coach as the Islanders continue their Jekyll and Hyde form in home and away top-flight football. Cagliari may have only triumphed five times in 2018/19 but four of those victories came at their Sardegna Arena home.

When asked to travel away from their Sardinian base, Cagliari have tended to toil. This term alone the away side have W1-D3-L8 on the road, and since the beginning of 2016/17 the Rossoblu have been beaten in 33/50 (66%) away Serie A  matches, recording only five clean sheets.

Cagliari have fired blanks in half of their 12 away trips this season and they could be in for another tough contest on Sunday, so much so that I’m happy to oppose them with almost even-money available on the home success.
