Wolfsburg v Eintracht Frankfurt – Volkswagen Arena at 14:30 live on BT Sport Europe
Who’s going to stop Bayern Munich recording an unprecedented fourth consecutive Bundesliga title in 2015/16? That’s the question that’s rife amongst German football followers as the new season gets underway this weekend.
Wolfsburg have been priced up as the next best thing behind the Bavarian powerhouse but much of their potential success this season is likely to hinge on the future of last season’s Player of the Year Kevin De Bruyne. The Belgian magician laid on a league record 20 assists as well as netting 10 goals for the Wolves last term but looks likely to leave for Manchester City this month.
For the time being, De Bruyne is fit and available for selection and Wolfsburg boss Dieter Hecking has confirmed he’s happy to select his prized asset despite the ongoing speculation. Hecking himself committed his future to the club over the summer and he’ll be looking forward to the Wolves’ first outing at their fearsome Volkswagen Arena home.
Wolfsburg’s magnificent campaign last season was built upon their imperious record as hosts – the Wolves were unbeaten (W14-D3-L0) and have now returned stunning W24-D7-L3 figures across the two full season’s under Hecking’s watch at home.
On Sunday they welcome Eintracht Frankfurt. Last season the visiting Eagles held the dubious honour of possessing the Bundesliga’s worst road record (W2-D5-L10) but boss Thomas Schaaf moved on with old favourite Armin Veh returning to the post in the off-season.
Summer signings have been solid rather than spectacular with a focus on bolstering a faltering backline the priority. However, it’s difficult to believe the visitors will find the magic defensive formula ahead of their daunting opening day encounter.
With that in mind, siding with Wolfsburg off a -1.5 Asian Handicap start makes total sense at 2.33. The hosts have been winning in style at the Volkswagen Arena since the start of 2013/14 with 15/34 (44%) of fixtures ending in a Wolves win by two or more goals. Across the same sample, Frankfurt have lost 13/34 (38%) of away games by the same margin, including seven of their 10 defeats last season.
Asian Handicap Betting Recommendation: Wolfsburg -1.5 @ 2.33
