West Ham v Aston Villa – Upton Park at 19:45 live on BT Sport 1
Favourites for the drop, Aston Villa, travel to Upton Park tonight continuing their fight against relegation, which to be honest looks inevitable. They face a West Ham side that have lost just 5 times this season, sitting 6th in the table, chasing a place in Europe next year.
The Hammers were in a similar position last term, pushing for a top 4 place until the wheels started to come off in the new year to finish the season in 12th spot. They are now under the tutelage of Slaven Bilic and look a more well-rounded, solid side and I don’t expect the big decline like last season.
They’ve lost just once in their last 12 matches in all competitions, but the draw with Man City at the end of January was their 7th in 12 league games. They continue to be a very hard team to beat, with only 2 teams suffering fewer defeats this campaign and sit a point behind Man Utd in 5th and just 6 points adrift of the top 4.
They posses a serious attacking threat with the likes of Valencia, Payet and now Emmanuel Emenike, brought in on loan who will give them another option going forward. This is a match that the fans will expect Bilic’s men to win, as I do, and they are a good price at 1.91 -0.5 on the Asian Handicap betting market.
Aston Villa are rooted to the bottom of the table, 10 points from safety, but are unbeaten in their last 3 league games. A win at home to Palace was followed by solid draw against top of the table Leicester, before earning a point in the derby away to West Brom. The Villains are still struggling for goals though, with just 3 goals in their last 5 BPL games and they will find it hard to break down the Hammers defence this evening.
They come into the match on the back of a 4-0 defeat in the FA Cup to Man City, which although will not be great for morale, it does mean they can put all their attentions into pulling off a miracle and avoiding relegation.
Despite their recent upturn in form, Aston Villa are an awful side and one that will find it hard to come away with anything against one of the hardest teams in the league to beat.
West Ham have once again been under-estimated, which is great for the punters and I will be backing them this evening with a lot of confidence.
