Watford v Tottenham Asian Handicap Preview – Sunday 1st January by @SC457

Watford v Tottenham – Vicarage Road at 13:30 live on Sky Sports 1

My first Asian Handicap preview of the New Year focuses on the clash between Watford and Tottenham at Vicarage Road. Spurs make the short trip to Hertfordshire looking for a vital away win to keep the pressure on the top 4.

Watford

After an impressive start to the season, the Hornets looked as though they have the quality to stay out of a relegation battle and finish comfortably mid-table. They don’t quite have the quality yet to be pushing for European places but there have been improvements.

Similar to last term though, their early season form has begun to disappear. Watford currently have just one win and one draw in their last 6 league matches.

They currently occupy 10th spot, 8 points clear of 18th placed Sunderland. However, with a number of teams currently below them all improving, Walter Mazzarri needs to rediscover their early season form and it won’t be easy against a rejuvenated Tottenham side especially with their current selection problems.

Mazzarri will be without a host of players due to injuries which have plagued them all season. The likes of Success, Mariappa, Behrami and Janmaat to name a few are all sidelined along with suspended Britos. Ben Watson will also be missing due to personal reasons.

Tottenham

It’s a credit to Spurs that they are still hot on the heels of the top 4 (barring Chelsea), despite not being at their best this season. Performances have not been to the high levels we saw throughout last years campaign, however, they have accumulated more points at this stage of the season, than last.

Like Watford, the Lilywhites have suffered with injuries this term and Pochettino faces a couple of selection problems for this match. Vertonghen and Walker are suspended leaving the  gaffer hoping Alderweireld will be fit after missing Wednesday’s game against the Saints with a virus.

Although they have selection problems in defence, in attack Tottenham are looking sharp. They have won 4 of their last 5 matches, scoring 14 times in that period, including 4 against a defensively strong Southampton side last time out. They are chasing their 4th straight win and look good value to get it.

Asian Handicap

On paper, Spurs are a far superior side here. They are the form team, whilst the Hornets are struggling to find a win.

Even if Watford do find a way past a depleted Tottenham defence, Spurs have more than enough in the attacking department to out score their hosts.

Asian Handicap Recommendation: Tottenham -0.75 at 1.92
