Watford v Crystal Palace – Vicarage Road at 16:00 live on Sky Sports 1
Not one of the most glamorous of Premier League fixtures on paper, but both Watford and Palace have surprised and impressed many people so far this season. The Hornets go into the game as 2.52 favourites but I’m expecting a close match as Watford who haven’t lost at home face one of the league’s best away sides.
Watford fans will be very pleased with how their team has started their Premier League campaign, picking up 9 points from their opening 6 matches, their only loss coming to title contenders Manchester City at the Etihad.
They began with 3 draws in a row before losing to City, but will come into the match full of confidence having won their last 2 against Swansea and Newcastle. It’s not been an easy run of games for Watford but they have over-achieved and will be very hard to beat again today.
Defensively the Hornets are strong, they have kept 3 clean sheets from their opening 6 and will look to make that 4 against a Palace side who have failed to score in their last 2 league matches.
They also look to have a decent striker in Odion Ighalo, who has made a great start having scored 4 this season including 3 in his last 2 appearances.
Crystal Palace have lost their last 2 BPL matches, but they too have had a very tough start to the campaign. They have already faced Arsenal, Man City, Chelsea and Tottenham and currently sit on 9 points.
Each of their 3 losses have only been by a single goal but they will want to avoid a third successive defeat at all costs today.
The Eagles will draw solace from their excellent away form, 5th best in the league last season and currently 4th best this term. They will defend deep today and look to the wings to counter attack using their pace to try and break Watford down. It will be a tall order for Palace though against a very solid Watford rear-guard who are full of confidence.
For me this match has ‘Draw’ written all over it, and a low scoring one at that. On the Asian Handicap betting market, the value is with the home side, as I think if either side will nick it, it will be Watford but by a single goal. You can back the Hornets +/- 0 at 1.81 but I’m more interested in the goals market.
Crystal Palace’s last 2 matches had 1 goal in each and 4 of Watford’s 6 matches have all failed to break the 3 goal barrier. Watford are string at the back and Palace will come into the match very defensively minded. Under 2.5 goals at 1.80 looks to be a great bit of value and is what I’m recommending for today.
Asian Handicap Betting Recommendation: Under 2.5 goals at 1.80
