Washington Wizards at Orlando Magic – Amway Centre at 23:00
The 2015-16 NBA season in the States gets underway on Tuesday night and we will be previewing 4 games a week to exploit the points spread anomalies and use overreactions to individual performances or team news to exploit value and make profit on the point spread markets throughout the season.
Game 1 previewed for this season begins Wednesday night 11pm UK time as the Orlando Magic host the Washington Wizards.
Season openers are always a tough proposition from a handicapping perspective as new players adjust to their surroundings and fit into a new style of play. Initially, even positive roster changes naturally take time to bed in and large changes in personnel has to be viewed as a disadvantage.
Washington, who made the conference semi-finals last season and finished with a winning record of 46-36 won’t be facing any of the initial problems that other teams will be facing, due to a near identical set up to last season. Only Paul Pearce who has transferred to the Clippers leaves a significant hole and young Otto Porter steps up to face his first full season as a key starter.
Orlando are in a period of development with one of the youngest squads in the NBA and finished off last season with a 25-57 record. Defense was a real issue for their young squad last year and despite the acquisition of former Bucks coach Scott Skiles, the first couple of weeks of the season is going to take some bedding in. Facing a side with a very small amount of disruption, Orlando will be vulnerable in this match up.
It is also worth noting that the local sports journos in Orlando for both the Sentinel and the Pinstriped Post cite issues with leadership for the Magic due to the sheer level of youth in the roster and took a more negative view on the Magic than the average national expected win total.
If all that wasn’t tempting enough, the Wizards won all 8 against the Magic last year and therefore couldn’t hope for a more welcoming opener to the 2015-16 season.
Washington can be backed (-4.5) on the spread at odds of 1.95 and can be expected to take care of this very modest spread without too much fuss.
Handicap Betting Recommendation: Washington Wizards -4.5 at 1.95
