VPS v SJK – Glory or despair? Sunday 16:30
High-budget team SJK are still facing the same troubles since early July. Highly praised coach Simo Valakari simply can’t make his lads find a way to the goal. Absolutely horrid games have given poor results and a chance for other contenders to challenge SJK for a medal.
Bottom of the league VPS were scoring more than ever early in the season, but a shaky defense made sure that they got no points either. Now that the defensive problems are over, they face big-time trouble in scoring, just like SJK. Striker Juho Mäkelä hasn’t found the net since June 22nd, yikes.
VPS have tried strengthening its squad in August. American defender Isiah Schafer seems to be a hit. SJK-loanee Juho Lähde (not eligible to play against SJK) hasn’t really brought what’s lacking from the offense, which is goals. As defensive midfielder Denis Abdulahi got ruled out for season, big man Nikko Boxall was recruited. The New Zealander has got his license fixed, and is a possible starter on Sunday.
Although both teams struggle with scoring, these derbies have often been rich in goals. Latest clash ended in a 3-2 SJK win, very deservedly so, as Valakari’s side have a load of confidence which VPS are clearly lacking.

FF Jaro v FC Inter – Shepherd and his sheep? Sunday 16:30
Turku team FC Inter played one of the season’s worst games in the whole league, when it lost 4-1 to KTP. Clearly the cup final spot claimed after penalties including two red cards had taken its toll on Dragtsma’s side. There was no signs of interest to defend, even top class goalie Magnus Bahne was shaky.
Host team FF Jaro got a wake-up call when Ilves ran past them and KTP reaching close. Eremenko sr.’s side has been for a good while on a safe distance from the absolute bottom, but now it’s time to step up.
Dragtsma has little to cheer due to the suspensions and a handful of lads playing a lot of football on both Sunday and Wednesday. He received some bright news, however as youngster Kaan Kairinen returned from his back injury. Jaro’s defender Ilya Vaganov will be suspended.
Inter will have a hard time to step up from their poor prestige. A cup final spot seems to have satisfied the squad, and league games are just something they have to do until late October. Jaro have enough of quality just in Eremenko jr. and Rivera.
Asian Handicapp Betting Recommendation: Jaro -0.25 @ 2.16
HJK v HIFK – Does Helsinki ever lose in Helsinki? Monday 16:30
Sonera stadium in central Helsinki has been a safe haven for both HIFK and HJK this year. Neither team has lost there, including previous derbies (both ending 1-1). HIFK battled a hard 1-1 draw against RoPS, after captain Jukka Halme was sent off during the first half. Former HJK-youngster Fredrik Lassas grabbed a yellow card and will therefore be suspended from meeting his former team.
HJK are still out in Europe, striving to renew last season’s place in Europa League group stage. Mika Lehkosuo’s side have a long way to travel, as they meet Russian side FC Krasnodar in the last qualifying stage. Needless to say, most of HJK’s stars are more focused on the qualifications than the derby. HJK will be missing Erfan Zeneli due to suspension. Star striker Mac Kandji, however should make his league debut. Second choice striker Ousman Jallow has an eye for goal.. The Gambian has scored a handful of winning goals for his side.
The Helsinki derby is a true derby. Neither placement in league table nor squad strength has any role in the end, which has been proved in previous games. The biggest clash will be seen between the two team’s fans. Fantastic game to watch!
