Vasco da Gama v Botafogo – Estadio Vasco da Gama at 20:00
We have the second leg of the Carioca final to look forward to on Sunday evening as Vasco host Botafogo to find out who will be crowned the kings of Rio!
After a close fought first leg, it was Vasco that came away with the victory as they dominated possession of the ball completing over 350 passes on their way to recording 56% of the match possession. Vasco grabbed the win via a Jorge Henrique goal in the 61st minute of the game.
Botafogo will have to improve from the first leg ten fold if they’re to overturn their first leg defeat. You tend to get the feeling that Botafogo have got one eye on the start of the national season next week as they’ll know that they need to get off to a strong start to avoid a relegation dog fight towards the back end of the season.
Vasco da Gama are rightly favourites for their domestic season as they look to gain promotion back to the top flight of Brazilian football after being relegated last season. It’s been a tough couple of years for one of Brazil’s biggest clubs but they finally seem to be getting back on track and getting the club back to the level that they belong!
There’s really not much separating these two sides but Botafogo will be dangerous on set pieces as they were in the first leg where they hit the woodwork twice from set plays. Vasco tend to give away a lot of fouls due to their high press game which has a detrimental effect on them as they struggle to combat sides physically in aerial duels.
The star man for Vasco is certainly former PSG winger Nene who is now in his second season with Vasco. The winger has already scored seven times this season and he should get to double figures in the national division of Serie B, even though he’s lacking the pace he used to possess the technical ability of Nene is above most other players in the league.
It’s going to be a tough game but I think there’s a little bit of value with backing Vasco to win the game today, especially as Bota will likely throw bodies forward in abundance towards the end of the game if the scores are still tied. Don’t go mad with the stakes but Vasco -0.5 is my recommendation.
