U.S. Open Golf Betting Preview – Thursday 18th June by @BannersBets

U.S Open Golf Championship – Chambers Bay at 17:00 live on Sky Sports 4

The second major championship of the year, the U.S Open gets underway on Thursday and it should be an excellent event from a viewing and betting perspective. The world’s best players are all taking part and unsurprisingly, Rory McIlroy is the bookies favourite with Jordan Spieth not far behind the Northern Irishman in the betting.

This year’s U.S Open host is Chambers Bay, which is located in University Place, Washington. Chambers Bay is a British links-style course without a tree in play, therefore it isn’t your traditional U.S Open venue. The course will play approximately 7,600 yards which is extremely long and the winning score will ultimately depend on the wind. The USGA like the winning score to be around the even par mark and if the wind blows I’m sure it won’t be far off.

By the looks of things, Chambers Bay will require a good all-around game but there are a few attributes which are more important than others. Firstly, the course is long and the fairways are wide, therefore the bigger hitters have the advantage. Secondly, the greens are huge and have a lot of undulations, this leading me to believe that good scrambling skills are required. Finally, the ability to perform well in windy conditions is imperative, consequently I’ve looked closely at the results of past Open Championships.

Recommended Bets

Justin Rose – After a poor start to the season, Justin Rose has started to play some excellent golf. The 2013 U.S. Open Champion has recorded a win and two second place finishes in the last couple of months, this indicating that his game is in great shape. This week’s venue, Chambers Bay is a course I’d expect Rose to perform well around, particularly when he’s in top form. Justin is long off the tee and great around the greens, these are important attributes. The Englishman has proved on multiple occasions that he can perform well in windy conditions, for example, last year he won the Scottish Open around Royal Aberdeen, which is a links-style golf course, like Chambers Bay.

4pts win only @ 20/1

Henrik Stenson – Henrik Stenson is one of the best players in the game without a major championship to his name, but that could soon change. Last year he finished 4th in the U.S. Open and he has also recorded top five’s in the Open and PGA Championship, this shows what a quality player Stenson is. The Swede is long off the tee and that is almost certainly an advantage around this week’s venue. The ability to play well on a links golf course is also an advantage and Henrik Stenson has finished 2nd, 3rd and 3rd in the Open Championship since 2008.

2.5pts each way @ 30/1

Paul Casey – Earlier in the year, Paul Casey said he had “all the motivation in the world” since becoming a father. Since then, he’s finished inside the top ten on five occasions, this includes a tie for 6th place in the Masters. Just like my other selections, Paul Casey hits it a long way, which is beneficial around a course which can play up to 7,900 yards. Chambers Bay is a links-style golf course and the Englishman has form around links golf courses, he’s finished 3rd and 7th in the Open Championship. Finally, Casey can be backed at 80/1, this is an excellent price and hopefully he’ll give us a run for our money.
