Three stunning football upsets that started the year

WHEN UNDERDOGS BEAT THE FAVOURITES

‘Expect the unexpected’ is probably the unofficial maxim of the world’s sports scene with seemingly invincible teams getting stunned and inevitably losing teams scoring more than the dominating squads. Eastbridge bet brokerage understands the dynamic nature of the world of athletes and competitions, and presents the the loudest three football upsets at 2019’s start where underdogs put favourites into their knees.

Maritimo 2-1 Portimonense

Portimonense SC started the year with a way better form than Maritimo. Portimonense had lost only one match that is more understandable than their defeat with Maritimo – their 1-4 defeat to Porto after their 3-2 victory over Tondela.

After the defeat, Portimonense hammered Vitoria Setubal, winning 3-1, then a 1-0 win over Feirense. Their last game before their match with Maritimo concluded in a 2-0 victory over Benfica, the squad that occupies the third tier of the Portuguese Primeira Liga.

On the other hand, CS Maritimo’s 2-0 loss to Sporting Braga was still fresh when they face Portimonense at the Estadio dos Barreiros. In addition, they are winless in four other games. They have a 0-1 defeat to Estoril and a 2-1 to Tondela, as well as a 0-1 to Benfica. Their best result when they walked into that Saturday match was a 1-1 draw with Feirense.

Portimonense’s standing in the league table at that time also assures them victory over Maritimo who occupies the 16th place at the time.

Nevertheless, Maritimo won 2-1 over Portimonense last Saturday. The win pushed them one step ahead in the table of the Portuguese league, from 16th place to 15th.

Wolves 0-2 Crystal Palace

The Wolverhampton Wanderers have won two of their last three games at Molineux, while Crystal Palace is keeping a very poor away record. The Eagles lost six games in their ten away games within the season, and two out of their three victories came from fixtures with squads in the relegation zone.

In addition to this, the Wolves stunned the Hotspurs 3-1 just before the previous year had ended. The Wanderers did had minor issues in the season such as a loss to the likes of Liverpool which are understandable.

With the Wolves standing inside the top ten of the English League, while Crystal Palace at a much lower tier, no one expected that the Eagles would score a 2-0 win over Wolverhampton.

Man City 2-1 Liverpool

Liverpool are unbeaten in their last eight matches overall, and are unbeaten in over 20 of their last games in the English Premier League. At the latter part of the previous month, Liverpool hammered Arsenal 5-1 where Roberto Firmino made a hat-trick, securing and validating the Reds’ topmost place in the English primary division.

Arsenal was ahead of the Reds by the 11th minute when Ainsley Maitland-Niles scored one for the Gunners. The Reds however responded with a devastating performance, humiliating Arsenal.

Such performance is quite unsurprising for a squad in Liverpool’s standing, and everyone is expecting that the Reds will go further to the club with invincible strength and prowess. That is true until Manchester City stunned them 2-1 last Thursday.

Sergio Aguero scored the first goal of the match at the Etihad with Leroy Sane kicking the finishing score, breaking Liverpool’s unbeaten streak of over 20 points in the English Premier League, as well as cutting the four points from the Reds in their lead in the league.
