Wycombe Wanderers v Aston Villa – Adams Park at 12:45 live on BT Sport 2
Saturday’s early FA Cup kick off see’s Premier League strugglers Aston Villa make the trip to Adams Park to face Wycombe Wanderers.
Last years FA Cup finalists, Aston Villa, are 7 points adrift at the bottom of the BPL and 11 from safety after enduring a very difficult season so far. This FA Cup tie may give them some brief respite from their run of 19 league games without a win but it’s no doubt a potential banana skin for the Villains.
Remi Garde’s side have done better on the road this term, earning 5 of their 8 points and scoring 62% of their goals away from home. This will be little comfort and motivation for the players though and it’s going to be a tough task for Garde to get his players motivated for this FA Cup tie, especially when the main focus will be on retaining their Premier League status.
Gareth Ainsworth won’t have that sort of problem with his side as promotion chasing Wycombe Wanderers will be looking to cause an early upset in the 3rd round of the FA Cup. They missed out on promotion last year, after reaching the play-offs but are sitting pretty in 6th after 24 games and a good cup run could help their cause in terms of confidence.
Wycombe haven’t exactly been prolific in front of goal this season though, with the lowest total of goals from teams in the top half of League 2, only 6 teams who have scored less than their 32 in 24 games.
At the other end though, their defence has been solid, conceding 24 times, only 3 teams in the league have conceded fewer. Against a Villa side who have average just 0.8 goals a game, they may just fancy their chances of keeping a clean sheet, adding to their 10 league shut-outs already this term.
Not surprisingly, I’m not expecting many goals here and neither are the bookmakers. The Under/Over goals on the Asian line is set at 2.25 with Overs at 1.91 and Unders at 2.01 and it’s hard to find an edge with those prices just about right.
Despite their poor form and with the possibility of the Villa side finding it hard to be motivated for this tie, I still make the 2.17 -0.5 on the Asian Handicap betting market the value bet for Saturday’s game. Wycombe will make Aston Villa work hard for it but at a short 1.79 +0.5, to earn at least a draw, I’ve got to be with the Premier League side to record a rare win.
Asian Handicap Betting Recommendation: Aston Villa -0.5 at 2.17
