Upton Park – Sunday 18th January at 13:30 live on Sky Sports 1
West Ham host Hull this Sunday in an important league fixture for both clubs. West Ham are without a league win their last 4 matches, not the worst statistic for Hammers fans in recent years, but after their impressive start to the season they could see themselves descending down the table rapidly if they can’t replicate their early season results. Hull are in the bottom three despite a couple of wins over the festive period and will almost certainly be embroiled in a dog fight to stay up towards the end of the season.
West Ham have a very respectable home record, only losing once since August and face a Hull side who have only won twice on the road all season. The Hammers are now 7th in the table after occupying a top four spot for most of the first half of the season, Champions League was a pipe dream but a Europa spot is a real possibility. They may also fancy their chances of putting together a good cup run after beating Everton on Tuesday evening in a thrilling FA Cup tie which was decided on penalties. Sam Allardyce has had his critics at West Ham but has got his team playing at their full potential and they go into every game full of confidence. They will look at this Sunday’s fixture as a game they should win.
Steve Bruce has had a very tough season, Hull have been poor. After spending a substantial amount of money, bringing in some good players, they haven’t performed as well as they should. They have suffered some injuries which has not helped matters, but the players they have brought in have not settled. The Premier League is a tough place to come, with its pace and physicality, some players don’t ever settle, unfortunately for Hull it seems some their acquisitions fall into this category.
I can’t see anything other than a West Ham win here, they haven’t been at their best lately, but Hull are not a side that should bother the Hammers, especially at Upton park. I think the bookies have been very generous, pricing West Ham up at 1.75. I’m tempted to recommend the Hammers -0.75 on the Asian Handicap but due to their recent form and being without Sakho, winning by 2 may be a bit hopeful, so instead I’m going with West Ham to Win @ 1.75.
