Werder Bremen v FC Koln Asian Handicap Preview – Monday 12th March

Werder Bremen v FC Koln – Weserstadion at 19:30 Live at BT Sport

When Florian Kohfeldt took over as Werder Bremen manager, Die Werderaner were on a run of 14 games without a win, a run of form that extended to the end of last season.

But the 35-year-old has changed Werder’s fortunes and the 2004 champions haven’t lost a single one of their eight competitive matches at home – a spell that includes five Bundesliga wins.

Kohfeldt was elevated from Bremen’s reserve team and is another Bundesliga manager who has been promoted from within and, just like Thomas Tuchel and Julian Nagelsmann, it’s proving to be a tremendous success for the north-western outfit.

Refreshed Bremen

Prior to this game, Kohfeldt has said that it’s “almost felt like an international break” for his side after their nine-day break. He gave his players a three-day rest at the start of the week and they’ll be reinvigorated heading into this game.

Bremen are nine points clear of the automatic relegation places but are only two points ahead of the relegation play-offs. So this is no dead rubber for them and they will be determined as ever to pick up maximum points on Monday.

Koln don’t travel well

Peter Stoger was sacked as Koln manager at the start of December after picking up just three points all season – ironically, he’s now in charge of third-placed Dortmund.

The 51-year-old had guided the Billy Goats to the Europa League the season before, and that seemed to be severely distracting their home form.

Just like Werder Bremen, Koln chooses to promote from within the club and Stefan Ruthenbeck was appointed after success with the Koln U19 side. Since he’s taken over, results have marginally improved, but they still lie rock bottom of the Bundesliga.

Arguably their best result of the season was their last away game against RB Leipzig, where they won 2-1, but on the whole, their form away from the Müngersdorfer Stadion has been dreadful. In the last 12 months they’ve picked up just 11 points on the road, and I can’t see that improving come Monday night.

The betting angle

Werder Bremen’s home form has improved dramatically since Florian Kohfeldt took over and I fancy that to continue on Monday night. They’ve beaten Hannover, Stuttgart, Wolfsburg, and Hamburg under Kohfeldt so beating bottom of the league Koln should be relatively routine.

Koln has lost eight games this season, conceding 19 goals in the process, and I think Ruthenbeck’s side could be in even further trouble after this one.

Asian Handicap Betting Recommendation: Werder Bremen -0.50  at 1.847
