Veikkausliiga Asian Handicap Preview – Sunday 29th May

KuPS v HJK

KuPS are truly a fascinating side. They haven’t lost even once in May and won 4 out of their 5 games. The latest win was their biggest so far as they beat IFK Mariehamn away 3-0. High offensive efficiency gave Rajamäki’s troops a big win despite the home team playing a good match. KuPS had only 3 shots on target in that game, which says quite a lot.

In Helsinki, HJK finally claimed the throne by defeating bitter rivals HIFK by 2-1. An electrifying start gave us all three goals during the quarter of an hour. Last year all three derby games ended in a draw, which raised speculations of HJK’s mental capability to win under such atmosphere. Anyhow, HJK showed a lot more mental strength this time. The second half was, however, a bit odd from HJK. They gave the initiative to HIFK who couldn’t capitalize on it. HIFK did create some few fair scoring chances and played probably their best half of their season, but HJK’s defense held tight.

With a win KuPS would enter the two weeks break with a hot streak and a good position to continue their run for medals. Their current streak has relied a lot on goalkeeper Johannes Kreidl’s clean sheets, which will be a hard task against a team that has by far scored the most goals in league.

While I do think KuPS success is a bubble that by some miracle hasn’t burst yet, HJK isn’t a too good of an away team. The painfully poor artificial turf in Kuopio is a tough piece for every away team, and I think KuPS have a good chance to extend their defeat-less run.

Asian Handicap Betting Recommendation: KuPS +0.5 at 1.85

HIFK v Ilves

HIFK’s bitter loss in Stadin derby extended their win-less run to 5 league games and was their third loss in a row. A solid second half put some hope in the reds’ supporters but with another defeat on Sunday, the team is on the brink of crisis. The team spirit that gave HIFK most of their wins last year hasn’t been present too often this season.

Ilves has been on the road a lot. This will be their sixth away game of the season, playing only three times at home. Their season started well with two away victories but reality has set in now. Three straight away defeats looks a lot more like the Ilves we know, who like to grab their points home at Tammela.

Although home team’s injury list is still awfully long, it has shortened with a few names. Third striker Ville Salmikivi and defender O-P Jurvainen are back. Midfielders Conti and Peltonen as well as defenders Kuusijärvi and Pirttijoki are still likely to miss the game. Ilves hasn’t struggled with injuries. On the contrary they’ve been enjoying of goalkeeper Hilander’s solid performances and Senegalese Emile Tendeng’s incredible season.

The second half HIFK gave against HJK was so promising that their luck is about to turn. Ilves aren’t exactly a favorable away side.

Asian Handicap Betting Recommendation: HIFK +/-0 (DNB) at 1.77

IFK Mariehamn v VPS

Mariehamn’s previous game was a strange one. Despite a good match they lost 0-3 at home against KuPS who used their few chances extremely well. The result also doubled the amount of conceded goals this season for IFK. It also ended Walter Viitala’s 500+ minutes long clean streak.

The home side were not the only ones to suffer a frustrating defeat last round. VPS played an away derby against SJK only to concede painfully late a 1-0 goal by Riski. Vuorinen’s squad defended with great discipline neutralizing all SJK’s offensive arsenal. In fact, VPS had quite a few proper scoring chances a bit before they conceded. A lot of bad luck in the offense, but the worst luck was experienced by Kevin Peth. The fullback fumbled near the end line and lost the ball to Tuco who could freely cross the ball to Riski.

VPS has missed two extremely important players lately, which is easy to see on the field. Vice-captain Veli Lampi’s injury has forced Vuorinen to use his 4го and 5го choices as fullbacks. Midfielder Juho Lähde’s absence is notable in their offensive creativity. Jamaican Steven Morrissey has, however, bloomed once again on a new position playing as a false 9.

VPS game has mostly been plagued by a poor turf, and fortunate to them Wiklöf-Holding is in a good shape. The away team is overlooked by a lot in this game and with their defensive discipline, I hold an away point plausible.

Asian Handicap Betting Recommendation: VPS +0.75 at 1.79
