Valencia v Monaco Asian Handicap Betting Preview – Wednesday 19th August

Valencia v Monaco – Mestalla Stadium at 19:45 live on BT Sports Extra 2

In arguably the tie of the Champions League play off round, last years quarter finalists Monaco, head to the Mestalla to take on Valencia with both sides looking to gain an advantage before the 2nd leg next Tuesday.

The Mestalla is a notoriously tough place to go and it’s no surprise that Valencia are favourites this evening, what may be surprising is their price to qualify of 1.64. Last season, Monaco topped their Champions League group containing Zenit, Bayer Leverkusen and Benfica, conceding just 1 goal in their 6 group matches.

Les Rouges et Blancs then defeated Arsenal in the last 16 before being knocked out in the quarter finals, losing finalists Juventus. They are known for their organisation and strong defence but do struggle going forward, scoring just 7 goals in their 10 matches in the UCL last term.

Monaco have also lost a number of key players this summer including Geoffrey Kondogbia, Yannick Ferreira Carrasco and Lucas Ocampos. Portuguese forward Ivan Cavaleiro is their most high profile signing but Leonardo Jardim’s squad looks weaker than last season.

Valencia have been away from Europe’s top tier competition for the last two seasons but things are looking brighter for Los Che. They were taken over by Singaporean Billionaore, Peter Lim 18 months ago and he has invested heavily in the club with the aim to get them back to their successes of the early 2000’s.

They enjoyed a successful domestic campaign last season, finishing in 4th and just 1 point behind Atletico Madrid and now will look towards mixing it with Europe’s elite. They have previously made the final on two occasions in 2000 and 2001 losing to Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. It may be too early for them to be serious contenders and they have to get passed Monaco first, but they are heading in the right direction.

Valencia will be looking to keep a clean sheet as well as taking a lead to Stade Louis II next week. A low scoring game is expected but their is no value on the Asian lines of under 2.5 at 1.71 and under 2.25 at 1.90.

Los Che will find it tough to break Monaco down but have the quality to do so, in what will be a cagey game. I make the 1.91 on offer for a home win a bit of value, although I expect it to be tight and decided by a single goal.

Asian Handicap Betting Recommendation: Valencia -0.5 @ 1.91
