Real Madrid v Sevilla – Lerkendal Stadion, Norway at 19:45 live on BT Sport 2
Champions League winners Real Madrid take on Europa League winners Sevilla at the Lerkendal Stadion in Trondheim, Norway tomorrow evening for the 41st edition of the UEFA Super Cup.
It will the 5th appearance for each side in the final, with Real lifting the title on 2 previous occasions and Sevilla once. The Andalusian’s have also finished runners-up three times, including against Real Madrid in 2014 when they were beaten 2-0 in Cardiff, thanks to a brace from Cristiano Ronaldo.
It is Sevilla’s third consecutive UEFA Super Cup final, a record, after winning the Europa League for 3 straight season’s and their 4th in the last 10 years. This is the 4th time a Super Cup final will be contested between 2 Spanish sides and have all featured Los Nervionenses.
Their only win came against Barcelona in 2006, defeating the Blaugrana 3-0 on that occasion. They have since lost to Barca, in 2015 along with Real in 2014 and AC Milan in 2007.
This will be new manager, Jorge Sampaoli’s first competitive match in charge of Sevilla but he has had a successful pre-season, winning all of their friendlies this Summer. Sampaoli has been very active in the transfer window after the club lost some of their best players from last season. With 8 new signings it will be interesting to see how they line-up and if they can gel as a team which can often take time.
Zinedine Zidane will looking to start off his first full season in charge of Los Blancos with some silverware and add to the Super Cup he won as a player in 2002 against Feyenoord.
Unfortunately for Zizou, he will be without the services of Cristiano Ronaldo who is still carrying an injury from the European Championship final. Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema are also expected to miss tomorrow’s match with question marks over their fitness, whilst Pepe and Toni Kroos are yet to train with the 1st team since the end of last season.
Real Madrid competed in the International Champions Cup again for their pre-season preparations with mixed results and performances. They were defeated by PSG but recorded victories over Cheslea and Bayern Munich which would have boosted morale before coming into this fixture.
The Merengues also hold a commanding head to head advantage over their opponents winning 94 of their 177 meetings, Sevilla with just 54 victories. Since they last met in the Super Cup, Real Madrid have won 3 of their 4 meetings. In their La Liga matches last season, Sevilla defeated Real at home 3-2 before being thrashed 4-0 at the Bernabeu. Sevilla are known for their strong record at home, but struggled on the road last year.
This should be an entertaining game pitting two European football specialists against each other. Due to Real Madrid’s injuries, the match could be closer than if they were at full strength hence why you can back them to win in 90 minutes at 1.90.
Sevilla have had a successful pre-season, but this is a big step up for Sampaoli’s new side. Due to Sevilla’s players and manager not having much time to work together, the value for me is backing Real to win this one despite missing some star players. Madrid’s head to head record against Sevilla and better record in this competition is enough for me to recommend them -0.5 on the Asian Handicap betting market at 1.90.
Asian Handicap Betting Recommendation: Real Madrid -0.5 at 1.90
