Shakhtar Donetsk v Atalanta
This group has been my favourite of the lot. The goals have flowed and the drama not stopping, Atalanta have the possibility of one of the most unlikely routes to progression.
After 3 gameweeks, La Dea were rooted to the bottom of the table and pointless. Since then they’ve got a point against Manchester City and a vital win at home against Dinamo Zagreb which gives them a genuine chance of qualification. Gian Piero Gasperini needs his side to win in Ukraine and hope Dinamo fail to beat Manchester City. On the flip side, Shakhtar will go through for sure should they win here but will also progress should they avoid defeat and Dinamo fail to beat Manchester City in Croatia.
So if there’s one game to watch on Wednesday night it has to be this one, I know I’ll be tuning in! Atalanta are always an enthralling side to watch but the dynamics of this game set it up as an even more viewable encounter. The Bergamo boys simply have to go for it but they do that anyway week in week out with their attacking style.
If they do get an early goal then the hosts have to come out and respond and with two terrible defences on show goals have to be the way to go. We can back over 3 goals at 1.850 and that looks a worthy play in what should be a sing song battle. I cannot see this bet losing if there is a first half goal, Atalanta have to attack which can leave gaps for Shakhtar to exploit on the break.
Shakhtar games are averaging 3.6 goals per game whereas Atalanta games are seeing 4 goals per game. Both have danger men going forward, the hosts with Moraes, Taison and Marlos causing havoc, the visitors also have threats despite doubts over Duvan Zapata and Josip Ilicic they still have Papau Gomez, Luis Muriel and Remo Freuler.
Asian Total Goals Betting Recommendation: Over 3.00 goals at 1.850
Olympiacos v Crvena zvezda
It’s a battle for a Europa League spot in Piraeus on Wednesday night between two traditionally big European outfits. Olympiakos are bottom of the group with a single point which they picked up on opening gameweek at home against Spurs. Red Star have 3 points which they managed in this exact reverse fixture back on gameweek 2.
Crvena Zvedza got a bit lucky in that game in Serbia a few months ago, they were trailing 1-0 before Olympiakos had a man sent off. Red Star took advantage of that dismissal and ran out 3-1 winners. They now have it in their hands in terms of getting into the Europa League, they avoid defeat here and they do just that.
However, they have possible the worst away record in Europe of seemingly any team ever. They lost all of their last 5 away games in this competition, losing by 2 or more in each of those, 3 or more in 4 of those too.
The Serbs have conceded the most goals in this competition and offer little threat at the business end of the pitch too, scoring in just one of their games. They will set up to defend here but if they do concede they have to come out and are then viable to getting caught on the break and picked off by the hosts.
Olympiakos are somewhat of a force going forward too, they’ve only failed to score once in this group and that was in Munich. They also notched twice in their two home games against Spurs and Bayern.
The Greek juggernauts have lost just once of their last 12 games when playing hosts. They’ll have the place rocking and the players can feed off that. I’m happy to put up Olympiakos with a -1 start on the Asian handicap at 1.870.
Asian Handicap Betting Recommendation: Olympiacos -1.00 at 1.870
Club Brugge v Real Madrid
Club Brugge are in a battle with Galatasaray for 3rd place and a Europa League spot. They’re in pole position though, if Gala fail to win in Paris against PSG then Brugge will confirm their spot in the champions league sister competition.
PSG are expected to get past the Turkish side and that could make this an entertaining game. Real Madrid are already through but they have so many riches going forward and players with a point to prove. Rodrygo, Gareth Bale, Vinicius and Luka Jovic could come in and they’re still a major threat at this level.
Brugge managed an impressive 2-2 draw at the Bernabeu in the reverse fixture which the much converted Denis bagging a brace. I could see a similar result here with goals likely at both ends. Los Blancos have upped their game of late and starting the score a lot more goals. Defensively they remain slightly dodgy though and Brugge can get on the scoresheet here.
The Blauw-Zwart do have defensive injuries and 18 year old Odilion Kossounou may have to fill in. With strong attacks and gettable defences I’m happy to back the 1.750 on over 2.75 goals in Belgium.
Asian Total Goals Betting Recommendation: Over 2.75 goals at 1.750
