Seattle Sounders v Toronto FC – CenturyLink Field AT 21:00 GMT
So here we are. The whole MLS 2019 season comes down to this one final matchup between Seattle and Toronto. A crowd in excess of 69,000 will be packed into CenturyLink Field as the Sounders host their first ever MLS Cup final. And what a cracker we will hopefully have in store. These two old rivals have plenty of recent history. They met in both the 2016 & 2017 finals, although on each occasion the matchup was in Toronto. The Sounders famously won on penalties in 2016 after a goalless draw but TFC gained revenge twelve months later. Is this now the ‘decider’ to end what has been an epic saga between the two clubs.
I think the big difference compared to a couple of years ago is that neither of these teams were truly expected to contest the MLS Cup final this season. Seattle were the #2 seed in the Western Conference. But the presumption was that LAFC would manage to prevail and be the representative. Toronto meanwhile, weren’t ever really talked about all season but have gradually been building up an impressive run of results. TFC are actually unbeaten in 13 matches and have become hot when it matters at the end of the campaign. Many will feel that there have been better teams in the East this year, such as NYCFC & Atlanta, or maybe even Philly. But the playoff experience that Toronto have built up in recent years can’t be underestimated. 2018 was a horrible campaign for Greg Vanney’s men but they stuck with him and the end result is another appearance at the end of season centrepiece.
These two teams met earlier in the season way back in April and Seattle won 3-2. The Sounders also won the one fixture between the two in 2018. I think this final is difficult to call but my gut feeling is that Seattle will find a way to win it. Whether that’s inside 90 mins, or after extra time or even penalties I’m not sure. But I have a suspicion they have that little bit of extra class. Guys like Nicolas Lodeiro & Jordan Morris seem right on top of their game at the moment. The bet I like for the final is over 2.75 goals. The new MLS playoff structure of one legged matches on their own has worked a treat. We’ve seen some games just explode into life and I think we will see an entertaining contest again. Finals can sometimes be tight but neither defence convinces me and there’s enough attacking talent on the field for this line to convert fully.
Asian Total Goals Betting Recommendation: Over 2.75 goals at 2.010
