RB Leipzig v Bayern Munich – Red Bull Arena at 05:30 GMT +1
RB Leipzig headed into the international break at the Bundesliga summit, picking up maximum points from their opening three games of the campaign under talented new head coach Julian Nagelsmann. Die Roten Bullen now face a major test of their potential title credentials when Bayern Munich come to town.
Nagelsmann produced a minor miracle to transform Hoffenheim’s fortunes from relegation battlers to Champions League participants, and the 32-year-old already appears to be working his magic in Leipzig. RB have struck at least twice in victories over Union Berlin, Eintracht Frankfurt and at Gladbach last time out.
Timo Werner has also appeared reborn under Nagelsmann’s watch, signing a new contract with the club and plundering a hat-trick in the 3-1 win at Gladbach. His clinical finishing, plus Die Roten Bullen’s high-energy pressing style, should ensure RB Leipzig cause the defending champions plenty of problems.
With a Champions League campaign to come, Leipzig have bolstered their squad depth with the additions of reserve goalkeeper Philipp Tschauner, defensive-minded players Luan Candido and Ethan Ampadu, as well as attacking talents such as Ademola Lookman, Christopher Nkunku, and Hannes Wolf.
The betting angle
However, it’s the tried and trusted that have performed with aplomb in the opening month of Bundesliga action. Confidence is flowing through the squad and Nagelsmann – who went unbeaten in his first three games as a manager against the record German champions – is hopeful of causing another upset.
So should RB Leipzig be 4.05 underdogs on Saturday evening? I’m not so sure. Having backed Die Roten Bullen each-way for title honours in July, I’ve huge faith in Nagelsmann’s ability to improve and enhance, and the stage has been set for the hosts to make a real statement this weekend.
RB Leipzig can be backed at 2.03 with a +0.50 start on the Asian Handicap line and that looks our best angle of attack, profiting should the home side avoid defeat. RB have lost just once in three meetings with Bayern at the Red Bull Arena, and that came back in 2017/18 by a single-goal margin.
Bayern can be opposed
Bayern Munich have registered comfortable victories over tame opponents Mainz and Schalke before the international break. But the Bavarians were far from convincing in their opening day draw against Hertha Berlin at the Allianz Arena, whilst their big-game mentality troubled them last term too.
Niko Kovac’s charges failed to meet expectations in the Champions League and picked up a solitary point from trips to fellow top-four finishers Dortmund (2-3), Leipzig (0-0) and Leverkusen (1-3) in 2018/19, suggesting there’s enough evidence to oppose odds-on quotes on the visitors this Saturday evening.
Asian Handicap Betting Recommendation: RB Leipzig +0.50 at 2.030
