PSV Eindhoven v Man United – Philips Stadion at 19:45 live on BT Sport 2
Manchester United return to the group stages of the Champions League this evening as they travel to Eindhoven to face last seasons Eredivisie champions PSV.
Louis van Gaal returns to his home nation and is up against PSV manager Phillip Cocu who worked under Van Gaal at Barca and at national level. LVG has been criticised recently with players apparently unhappy with the flatness in the dressing room and there have been questions over his tactical style, but their win over Liverpool on Saturday would have built some confidence.
United’s domestic performances this season haven’t been too impressive, two laboured 1-0 wins over Tottenham and Villa was followed up with a 0-0 with Newcastle and an away loss to Swansea. Their first half display against Liverpool was arguably the worst they has played so far this season but they fully deserved the 3-1 win after their second half performance.
You would have only been profitable backing Utd on the Asian Handicap betting market on one occasion domestically so far this season, but they go into tonight’s match as favourties and can be backed -0.25 at 2.03.
In qualification, the Red Devils covered their line in both legs against Club Brugge, putting 7 past them over the 2 games. Wayne Rooney was responsible for 3 of those, scoring a hat-trick in a 4-0 away win, but is out tonight due to injury.
Eindhoven are unbeaten in their opening 5 league matches, scoring 14 times but have conceded 4 times, which isn’t that solid for the Dutch league. They come into the match on the back of a 6-0 win away to Cambuur and are playing some great football. Memphis Depay was instrumental last season for PSV but they don’t seem to be missing him too much this term. Depay opened his account for United in Europe against Brugge and he will be keen to impress this evening.
PSV were unimpressive in last seasons Europa League, finishing 2nd in their group before getting knocked out in the last 16 of the competition and I think they may struggle qualifying out of Group B which includes CSKA and Wolfsburg.
United have struggled going forward so far this season in the BPL despite their number of attacking options. Before Liverpool they registered 49 attempts, with only 15 on target and 2 goals, but with 9 shots, 3 on target and 3 goals against Liverpool, things might be starting to change for Man Utd.
Despite some early problems in front if goal, Van Gaal has brought a lot more organisation to the team and their defence has been strong, conceding just 3 in their opening 7 competitive matches.
United’s price of 2.43 is a generous one and like them -0.25 on the Asian Handicap betting market. Even without Rooney, they will create and with enough chances, they will score. Coupled with another strong defensive display, they are the value bet.
Asian Handicap Betting Recommendation: Man Utd -0.25 at 2.03
