Premier League Match Previews – 22nd December Sunday

Everton v Arsenal

Both of these sides currently have caretaker managers in charge, but have both had completely different fortunes since taking over.

Duncan Ferguson has a win and a draw against Chelsea and Manchester United in his first two games and, having reverted back to basics with a 4-4-2, his injury-savaged side have really impressed over the last couple of weeks. However, they are really suffering with injuries and you have to question how long the 4-4-2 will continue to work, with teams potentially starting to work out how to stop it.

Freddie Ljungberg has won one of his five games as Arsenal interim head coach, and that was a 3-1 win after coming from behind against West Ham. Their most recent defeat was to champions Manchester City, who barely got out of second gear in their 3-0 win at the Emirates. The Gunners were shambolic defensively and, if it wasn’t Bernd Leno, City could have scored five or six. Captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is also struggling to find the back of the net at the minute, which is a worrying sign for Ljungberg, especially when they are conceding so many goals.

But it’s not necessarily the Arsenal players that are bad, it’s the way the club is being run and, in Ljungberg’s defence, he hasn’t even got a coaching staff to help him out. Per Mertesacker is the only coach the Swede has got, and there were even pictures that emerged of the club doctor having to help out in training sessions.

Mikel Arteta is being heavily linked with the job but I highly doubt the City assistant manager will take charge before this game and, even if he does, it’ll take more than a few training sessions to turn this team around. Everton seem to be on the up and, with Carlo Ancelotti seemingly taking over at Goodison Park, the players will be eager to impress the world class coach.

So, I like the 2.060 available on Everton with a -0.25 start. A win would give us a full payout and a draw would see us have half our stake returned.

Asian Handicap Betting Recommendation: Everton – 0.25 at 2.060

Manchester City v Leicester

Two of the three highest scores take each other on at the Etihad on Saturday, with both sides chasing down Liverpool at the top of the table.

Manchester City have started to find some form recently and, after some poor results including a 2-1 defeat to arch rivals Manchester United, they bounced back with a 3-0 demolition of Arsenal at the Emirates. Kevin De Bruyne won Man of the Match in that one and showed just why he is one of the best players in the world.

As for Leicester, they could only muster a draw at home to relegation candidates Norwich on Saturday, but I feel as if this is the perfect game for them to bounce back for. Jamie Vardy couldn’t continue his incredible goalscoring streak against the Canaries, however, I’d be confident in him bagging against a defence that is likely to consist of Fernandinho and Nicolas Otamendi.

Leicester did go a fair few games without conceding before last weekend but, with Pep Guardiola’s forward line being one of the best in the league, I’d be surprised to see that happen here. But, as I just mentioned, they’d fancy themselves to score at least one goal against a side that, before Sunday’s game against Arsenal, hadn’t kept a clean sheet in all competitions since the end of October.

Both sides will know that they can’t afford to lose this one if they are to continue to challenge Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool at the top of the table so I think they’ll both play the only way they know how – attack, attack, attack.

This game has goals written all over it and I’m slightly surprised that the goals line for this game is as low as it is. You can back over 3.25 goals at 2.000, which would mean three goals would see half our stake returned and four or more result in a full payout. This bet looks superb value.

Asian Total Goals Betting Recommendation: Over 3.25 goals at 2.000

Watford v Manchester United

Watford’s first game under Nigel Pearson couldn’t have been much tougher – an away trip to league leaders Liverpool. But the Hornets made a good account of themselves on Merseyside, conceding just two goals and creating plenty of chances to score themselves. It was a positive sign for Watford and I believe that if anyone can get them out of the relegation trouble they’re currently in, it’ll be Pearson.

Have Manchester United turned a corner? I don’t think so. That win against Manchester City was a phenomenal result but a 1-1 draw at home to Everton showed they’re still extremely vulnerable. A draw was probably a fair result in that one and it wasn’t a performance that excited me at all. They relied on 18-year-old Mason Greenwood coming off the bench to score the equaliser and, bar Marcus Rashford, I struggle to see too much quality in their side.

I’d actually argue that Watford have a few players that would get into this United side, including Abdoulaye Doucoure and possibly Gerard Deulofeu and Roberto Pereyra, and I think they can cause the Red Devils some problems at Vicarage Road. Bar some Liverpool magic, they conceded very few chances against the Reds and, if they defend the way they did at Anfield, there’s a good possibility that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side will struggle to get on the scoresheet at all in Hertfordshire.

You can back Watford with a +0.75 start on the Asian handicap at 1.850 which I think is a fair price and, having deserved a point away at Liverpool, I see no reason why they can’t get something here. This may seem slightly bold but, after seeing their performance against Liverpool, I can see the way Pearson has began to transform this side. A draw would see a full payout and a Manchester United win by one goal would see half our stake returned.

Asian Handicap Betting Recommendation: Watford +0.75 at 1.850
