Montpellier v Paris Saint-Germain – Stade de la Mosson at 19:30 live on BT Sport ESPN
Montpellier host the French champions on Friday night and are looking for their first win of the new season having lost their first 2 matches. PSG have a good record at the Stade de la Mosson and look to add another 3 points to their 6 from their opening two fixtures.
Les Parisiens have been solid in their opening league games, winning a tricky first match against Lille 1-0 with 10 men and a 2-0 win at the Parc des Princes against Ajaccio on Sunday. They haven’t been at their best but have still picked up wins and will only improve as the season continues.
Montpellier won the title just 4 seasons ago but have fallen behind since then. Last season was considered a fairly successful one, finishing 7th but they may find it hard to build on that success with very few changes made over the summer.
La Paillade couldn’t have had a worse start, losing to newly promoted Angers 2-0 at home before suffering a loss away to Rennes last weekend. They now welcome the champions and I can’t see things getting much better for the club from the south of France.
PSG haven’t lost at the Stade de la Mosson in their last 6 visits and you have to go all the way back to 2003 for the last Montpellier victory in this fixture. Montpellier were strong at home last term however, winning 11 of their 19 matches but I can’t see anything but a PSG win tomorrow night.
Les Rouge-et-Bleu are rightfully big favourites and I’m surprised their price is not shorter than 1.55. Lille did provide a tough test in their only away Ligue 1 fixture this term, especially with PSG down to 10-men, but they still came through that with 3 points.
Ibrahimovic is still ruled out with knee trouble so Cavani is likely to start as a lone striker, but I don’t see this affecting them going forward and creating chances and scoring. We may also see a debut from Angel Di Maria after his £45M move from Man Utd.
The Asian Handicap betting line is 1 meaning PSG would have to win by 2 goals or more for a return, something they only managed 4 times in 19 away matches last season, (5 pushes 10 losses when -1). Seven of the 10 losses when backing them -1 came in the first half of the season however, with 2 of the 5 wins at -1 coming in their last 3 away matches.
PSG have improved and Montpellier haven’t which is why I am recommending the champions.
Asian Handicap Betting Recommendation: Paris Saint-Germain -1 at 1.85
