Mainz v Hoffenheim – Coface Arena at 19.30 live on BT Sport Europe
The Friday night Bundesliga fixture has taken no prisoners in the opening exchanges of 2015/16 and Mainz’s match-up with Hoffenheim to kick-start matchday five throws up plenty of intriguing possibilities.
For the hosts, Martin Schmidt is looking for a response from his side having gone down to a disappointing 2-1 defeat at Schalke last weekend. Having put in two excellent efforts when winning away to Gladbach 2-1 and dispatching Hannover with ease 3-0 at their Coface Arena home, last Sunday’s loss was a blow for the Zerofivers.
Still, back on familiar territory, Mainz will have plenty of support in the markets ahead of their date with Hoffenheim. The south-western city side have returned W4-D2-L3 when entertaining Bundesliga opposition under Schmidt’s watch; throw in their solid W6-D4-L2 head-to-head advantage over Hoffe and you can see why a home victory will appeal.
The case to oppose Markus Gisdol’s visitors increases when you inspect their worrying 2015 form. Hoffenheim have already suffered 12 league defeats this calendar year and produced a real Jekyll and Hyde display at home to Werder Bremen last weekend, eventually leaking two late goals and losing out 3-1 despite dominating the first 45 minutes.
Hoffe’s solitary point came in a drab and lifeless display at newly-promoted Darmstadt before the international break. That goalless draw was proceeded by defeats to big guns Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen so whilst the fixture list hasn’t exactly been kind, Gisdol’s troops do now boast the unenviable record of making Hoffenheim’s worst ever start in their short Bundesliga history.
But I’m unwilling to pull the trigger on Mainz as there are better Asian plays elsewhere. For example, Over 2.75 Goals has been chalked up at 1.97 and deserves our full attention. Since taking charge of the home side, Mainz have netted in all bar one of Schmidt’s nine matches at the Coface Arena with Both Teams To Score also banking on five occasions.
Looking further back, the Carnival Club have been involved in 10/16 successful Over 2.5 Goals bets on home soil and it tallies nicely with Hoffenheim’s penchant for high-scoring games. Eduardo Vargas and Steven Zuber could both be released by the visitors who’ve scored in 28/40 (70%) Bundesliga road trips and kept only five shutouts on their travels since the start of last season – 10 of their previous 15 away days have also featured three or more goals.
Mainz have their claims but Hoffenheim are due a performance and can play their part in an entertaining Friday night encounter from Europe’s top-scoring league. Over 2.75 Goals at 1.97 is the recommended play.
Asian Handicap Betting Recommendation: Over 2.75 goals at 1.97
