Gent v Wolfsburg Asian Handicap Preview – Wednesday 17th February

Gent v Wolfsburg – Ghelamco Arena at 19:45 live on BT Sport 2

Two fairly relative Champions League novices face each other this evening as Belgian League title holders Gent face German side Wolfsburg at the Ghelamco Arena. Both sides are looking to make it to the quarter finals for the first time and will fancy their chances after good group stages.

The hosts, in their first ever Champions League tournament, made it through a very tough group, finishing runners up to Zenit St. Petersburg. After picking up just one point from their first 3 matches in group H, Gent went on to beat Valencia, Lyon and Zenit to progress to the knockout stages.

They scored in each of their 6 group matches and were unbeaten at home, drawing 1, winning 2. They are currently sitting in second place of their domestic league, behind Club Brugge on goal difference and lost two consecutive matches to their rivals, in the league and cup. However, they bounced back with a win last weekend and should head into tonight’s game with confidence.

De Buffalo’s are underdogs at 2.88 this evening and 3.50 to make it through to the quarter finals and I think they have been underestimated. They showed real quality and resilience in the group stages and should provide Wolfsburg with a tough test.

Wolfsburg eased through group B, winning 4 of their 6 matches and knocked out Man Utd in the process. They did suffer 2 defeats, both away from home to Utd and PSV Eindhoven but defensively they were generally strong, keeping 3 clean sheets.

Domestically, Die Wölfe are not hitting the highs of last season when they finished second to Bayern Munich. Picking up just one point from a possible nine since the Winter break, they currently sit in 8th place in the Bundesliga but are expected to win this evening at 2.38 and ease through to the next round at 1.37.

I makes those prices a bit short and I certainly couldn’t back Wolfsburg to take a lead back to the Volkswagen Arena with any confidence. The value is with the Belgian champions +/- 0 (Draw No Bet) on the Asian Handicap betting market at 2.07 and there is also some value on the goals market.

With both teams looking to make it to their first UCL quarter final, I think this could be a low scoring, edgy and tight affair. Two of Gent’s three home matches saw 2 goals or fewer as did 2 of Wolfburgs 3 road matches. The 1.90 available on Under 2.5 goals is a great price and one that I think will shorten up.

Asian Handicap Betting Recommendation: Gent +/- 0 at 2.03 & Under 2.5 at 1.90
