Espanyol v Getafe Match Preview – 24th November Sunday

Espanyol v Getafe – Estadi Cornellà-El Prat at 11:00 GMT

Espanyol gave head coach David Gallego until October before pulling the trigger dismissing their summer appointment after a dreadful start to their La Liga campaign. The replacement for Rubi struggled to exert his authority on a team that toiled following the departures of Mario Hermoso and Borja Iglesias.

The Barcelona-based outfit were 19th and had won just once from their opening eight matches in the division when the decision was made by the RCDE Stadium hierarchy. Espanyol then moved quick to snap up former Sevilla and Girona boss Pablo Machin as they seek to preserve their top-flight status for another year.

Machin was famed for guiding Girona to their first ever promotion to La Liga in 2017 and subsequently led the Catalan club to a top-half finish using his 3-5-2 formation. He was then appointed at Sevilla but was dismissed in March following the club’s exit from the Europa League at the Round of 16 stage.

Bar a 1-0 victory away at Levante, Los Periquitos’ form has shown little sign of improvement over the past six weeks. Admittedly enduring a tough schedule,  Espanyol have suffered defeats against Atletico Madrid, Athletic Bilbao and Valencia, as well as Villarreal during their continued lean streak.

Results haven’t always matched performances, mind. Machin’s men have put in a series of determined displays just lacking a little extra quality in both boxes. Los Periquitos are comfortably clear of the bottom three across a range of underlying metrics with their summer sales arguably to blame for the sudden downturn.

Getafe can pick up positive result

Espanyol are pointless at the RCDE Stadium this season from six outings and their task looks just as difficult on Sunday morning this weekend when Getafe arrive from the capital. The Madrid minnows have established themselves as a serious top-half team in Spain with a side built on organisation and resilience.

Workaholic head coach Jose Bordalas came ever so close to leading Los Azulones into the Champions League last term and with a squad that is largely intact, the competitive outfit have continued to sit amongst La Liga’s largest clubs in the upper echelons of the embryonic league table.

Getafe may not win many prizes for aesthetics, but they get through the miles and rarely give their opponents a moment’s rest. Remarkably, Bordalas’ boys have been beaten just 12 times since the beginning of last season with Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid accounting for seven of those defeats.

With that in mind, it makes sense to keep the visiting underdogs onside and quotes of 1.70 on Los Azulones with a +0.25 start are too good to turn down.

Asian Handicap Betting Recommendation: Getafe +0.25 at 1.700
