Atletico Madrid v Getafe – Wanda Metropolitano Stadium at 14:00 GMT +1
A Madrid derby takes centre-stage on the opening weekend of the new La Liga season in the Spanish capital on Sunday night as Atletico Madrid take on Getafe at the Wanda Metropolitano. The hosts have undergone major surgery in the summer, whilst the visitors arrive with minimal amendments ahead of 2019/20.
Diego Simeone has been in charge of Atletico since 2011, tabling a top- three finish in each of his past seven seasons. However, the Argentine has never presided over such a sweeping off-season overhaul with Antoine Griezmann, Diego Godin, Juanfran, Rodri, Felipe Luis and Luis Hernandez all departing.
The club believe they addressed areas of weakness, adding much-needed youth and energy into what was becoming an increasingly aging, stale squad. Whether Los Colchoneros can hit the ground running this weekend remains to be seen, but Atletico are likely to be as robust and as well-drilled as ever under Simeone.
Getafe can keep Atleti in-check
Getafe upset the odds to almost pinch a Champions League qualification place last term and many are surprised to see the Madrid minnows enter the new campaign with their squad largely intact. Los Azulones will therefore be expected to offer their standard competitive service on Sunday night.
Workaholic coach Jose Bordalas has made Getafe one of the most streetwise sides in Europe and Los Azulones will be following the same path to success. They may not win many prizes for aesthetics, but they get through the miles and rarely give their opponents a moment’s rest through their sheer ferocity.
Getafe were only beaten in four away days last term – Real Madrid, Atletico, Barcelona and Real Sociedad (where they were denied two blatant penalties) – suggesting they could come unstuck here but Bordalas’ boys are a remarkably resilient outfit and Los Azulones are capable of keeping the score down.
The betting angle
It’s difficult to ignore quotes of 1.79 available on Under 2.5 Goals. Despite the clear and obvious changes around the Wanda Metropolitano this summer, Simeone’s default position is safety and with new players joining, it could take time for Atletico to find their fluent best in the attacking third.
Over the last two seasons, these two teams combined to deliver Under 2.5 Goals in 67% of their overall La Liga encounters, with that figure increasing to 70% when only viewing matches at the Wanda, as well as Getafe’s road games. it therefore makes sense to follow the trends again at a nice price.
Asian Total Goals Betting Recommendation: Under 2.50 Goals at 1.790
