Roma v Liverpool – Stadio Olimpico at 19:45

The first leg

The first leg of the semi-final clash between Liverpool and AS Roma will go down as one of the Champions League’s classic matches. Liverpool swept the Italians aside, scoring 5 goals to give themselves a huge chance of reaching the finals of the tournament.

Roma pulled back two late goals, giving themselves a slight glimmer of hope.

Roma will be hoping for a repeat of their Barcelona heroics

When Barcelona took a 4-1 lead to the Stadio Olimpico for their Quarter Final second leg tie against Roma, few people predicted that the Italians would progress.

That’s exactly what happened, though. A switch to a three-at-the-back took Barcelona by surprise and the Romans were emphatic, winning 3-0.

Eusebio Di Francesco, the Roma boss, will be hoping for a repeat on Wednesday night.

Injuries – a problem for Liverpool

Despite the emphatic win, there were two sour notes for the Reds. The first was the tragic news of the Liverpool fan, Sean Cox, who was attacked by Roma hooligans. Thoughts with his friends and family as the Red fights for his life in hospital. There will be much focus on the safety of fans in the second leg, and the two clubs have already met with the police and UEFA to ensure there is no repeat.

The second sour note for Jurgen Klopp’s side was the early injury to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The midfielder, who had been in fine form, is ruled out for the rest of the season and will miss the World Cup, too.

His injury leaves Liverpool short in the centre of midfield, with Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Gini Wijnaldum the only senior players available in that position.

Away goal key for Liverpool

One thing we know about this Liverpool side is that they know how to score goals. Expect them to go out and attack Roma in search of that crucial away goal.

Should the Reds get one, it’ll be hard to see a way back for Roma. The Romans would need to score four to progress. It’s set to be an intriguing tie.
