AS Roma v SS Lazio – Stadio Olimpico at 17:00 Live at BT Sport
The top five clubs in Serie A have racked up 47 wins from their opening 58 league fixtures this season with a frightening pace being set at the summit. With capital rivals, Roma and Lazio both amongst the frontrunners, the first Derby della Capitale of the campaign feels like the most important meeting in years.
It also promises to be an important test for Giallorossi boss Eusebio Di Francesco. Arriving at Roma following a successful stint at Sassuolo, Di Francesco has guided his new group to 11 victories from their first 15 games across all competitions.
However, the Wolves’ two defeats have come when welcoming Napoli and Inter Milan – the only two sides they’ve faced above them in the standing, leading to questions on whether the Roma manager is able to beat the big sides in Serie A.
The Giallorossi currently occupy fifth and are five points adrift of table-toppers Napoli, but with a game in-hand. And should they fail to secure maximum points here, it’ll extend a mediocre return when meeting Italy’s elite. Indeed, since the start of last season, Roma have W1-D1-L4 against the top-five opposition.
Goals on the agenda
Both sides scored in all bar one of those six encounters and the feeling is, more will be on the agenda when these two bitter rivals collide on Saturday evening. With half of the last six Serie A contests between Roma and Lazio featuring at least four goals, backing Over 3 Goals at 1.94 appeals here.
Backing this selection will see our stake returned should exactly three goals be scored with the profit made should four or more be plundered at the Stadio Olimpico. Only two goals or fewer would see our selection sunk.
Roma’s improved defensive record has seen their league fixtures average only 2.55 goals-per-game but Lazio’s 3.91 goals-per-game average is hugely encouraging with Simone Inzaghi’s side only once failing to score in 2017/18 and that came in their campaign curtain-raiser.
The Biancocelesti arrive a point above their rivals and have tabled 14 triumphs from 16 outings across all competitions. In league action, the Eagles have won all six games as guests, including coming from behind to overcome Juventus in Turin.
Despite their obvious menace in attacking areas, the visitors haven’t proven quite so tight at the back. Inzaghi’s charges have only once kept their sheets clean on the road so Roma should also expect to grab a goal in what should prove to be a very entertaining match.
