Real Madrid v Bayern Munich – Santiago Bernabéu at 19:45
The First Leg
To the surprise of many, the first leg encounter between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid was a tie of somewhat poor quality. A number of passes were misplaced, mistakes were made and there were few moments of real quality.
It ended 2-1, with a sweet strike by Real Madrid left-back Marcelo one of the few moments of top-class technique.
All to play for
Bayern Munich will go into the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu knowing that it is all to play for. They trail by just one goal, although they will need to score at least two to go through due to Real Madrid’s two away goals.
Bayern has managed to beat Madrid 11 times during all clashes between the sides, and Jupp Heynckes will have confidence his men can make it 12.
Injuries could hamper Bayern
The first leg was one marred by injuries for Bayern Munich, and they could continue to hamper their chances in the second leg. Jerome Boateng, one of the casualties in the first leg, is out for the rest of the season and will miss the second leg as a result.
Javi Martinez and Arjen Robben may also miss out through injury, but David Alaba may be able to return, which would be a huge boost for the Bavarians.
The first goal will be key
As with many second leg ties, the first goal here will be key. Should Bayern strike first, it will give them the boost in confidence to push on and grab that all-important second goal.
However, if Real Madrid strikes first, it could signal the end of the contest. It would mean that Bayern requires three goals to proceed.
