Wolverhampton Wanderers’ dynamic attacker

While Helder Costa hasn’t been able to match his return of 12 goals and 11 assists from last season, the 24-year-old was still a crucial contributor towards Wolverhampton Wanderers’ fantastic promotion campaign.

The scorer of five goals and supplier of six assists has proved emphatically why he’s such an asset to Nuno Espirito Santo’s tactically astute outfit throughout his 39 appearances in all competitions.

Full of pace, energy, and dynamism, the Portuguese flyer’s added plenty of creativity, imagination, and unpredictability into Wolves’ work in the final third. From his customary wide starting position, Costa’s flourished in isolation scenarios, where he’s used his dazzling ball control and a vast array of tricks, feints, shoulder drops and shimmies to outfox his marker. Upon amalgamating this with his wicked acceleration, agility and low centre of gravity, and Costa is certainly a tough, elusive proposition for any defender.

Costa doesn’t solely hug the touchline, however, for he’s also been effective when coming infield to connect play with his back to goal and when performing slick rotations with his fellow attackers to unsettle defensive structures.

In terms of his passing, the former Benfica starlet has illustrated his quality here too, where he’s combined intricately in close quarters, manufactured many chances with his incisive through balls and kept things simple when need be. Although he’s committed the odd error in this regard, it’s still an area that he performs well in but can vitally still improve upon.

A shrewd identifier of vacant spaces, his movement to exploit openings has been another feature of his work. Whether making the most of space in between the opposition lines, down the channels or through his well-directed runs in behind, his intelligence, plus timing of his movement, has added another layer of upside.

Press resistant, full of class but also a key cog on the defensive end, where he smartly presses and closes off passes routes, the buzzing attacker’s worth has been significant in Wolves’ magnificent campaign, despite his manager wanting him to produce the goods on a more consistent basis.

With Wolves heading to the Premier League next term, Costa definitely looks set to be an instrumental figure as the club hope to continue their remarkable upward trajectory.
