Premier League Match Previews – 2nd February Saturday

Tottenham v Newcastle

Tottenham Hotspur will be aiming to complete a Premier League double when they take on Newcastle United at Wembley on Saturday. The 3rd placed Spurs are slowly making their way behind league leaders Liverpool in the table, and might be preparing for a shock attack for the title victory. Newcastle United, on the other hand, will be entering the match looking forward to secure back-to-back victories against another top-ranked team following their success against Manchester City on Tuesday.

While everyone seemed focused on the top two competitors, it might come as a surprise for everyone that the Spurs are just two points behind Manchester City as well as 7 points behind Liverpool. The Spurs are definitely crawling their way to the top, needing just three points to cruise past City in the standings. Even though Mauricio Pochettino had to face serious injury crisis and a few unavailable players, Tottenham still managed to win two of their previous games against Fulham and Watford. The Spurs will be without Harry Kane and Dele Alli, but he has enough firepower to survive without their assistance. Moreover, Son Heung-Min is back with the Spurs after his duty with the Korean national team in the Asian Cup which could further strengthen their attacks.

Rafa Benitez’ Newcastle might prove to be a tough opponent after beating Manchester City on Tuesday. Apart from this, they are currently on the back of two consecutive victories after edging past Cardiff City, leaving them a few points above the relegation zone. However, it should be taken into consideration that the Magpies are not the best in picking up points on the road, and it would be much more challenging since they will be facing a side like Tottenham. A victory for the Spurs on Saturday will guarantee them the second spot in the table as well as the chance to bag the Premier League title victory.

Chelsea v Huddersfield

Chelsea will take on Huddersfield Town at Stamford Bridge on Saturday for their Premier League clash, aiming to bounce back from their humiliating 0-4 defeat to Bournemouth.  The Cherries conveyed the biggest reality check to Chelsea when they thrashed them at the Vitality Stadium. The team which were unbeaten for straight 19 matches at the start of the season never expected to be demolished by a team like the Cherries which resulted in Chelsea slipping from the top four.

The pressure is obviously growing on Maurizio Sarri after seeing his men suffered their heaviest loss in the top flight. Fortunately for them, they will host relegation strugglers Huddersfield on Saturday which could make things easier for them. Chelsea has no injury concerns as of now, but injuries shouldn’t really be a concern compared to their defensive tactics. To make things more frustrating, Manchester United are just two points below Chelsea, slowly making their way past the Blues at the 6th spot. Chelsea cannot afford any more failures if they want to avoid slipping from the top four as well as missing out on a Champions League campaign.

Huddersfield Town, on the other hand, lost 10 of their previous 11 matches in the league, leaving them at the bottom of the table and a full 12 points below the safety zone. They are currently on a six-match winless run on the road, also failing to score even one goal in their previous three away matches. With just 14 fixtures left to play this season, the Terriers are in a really dangerous territory and cannot afford slip-ups. Scoring just 13 league goals so far this term, Jan Siewart’s men are the lowest scorers in the league. However, if they want to remain in the English top flight, they will need to get pass the Blues’ shaky defense and notch goals.

Everton v Wolves

Two competitive teams will face each other this Saturday as the Wolverhampton Wanderers make a trip to Goodison Park to take on Everton for some Premier League action. The hosts are currently at the 8th place in the standings, just one place below the visitors ahead of their face-off this weekend. A home win for Everton would definitely hurl them above their opponents in the Premier League standings.

The Toffees have been disappointingly inconsistent lately, coming out victorious in 2 as well as losing 3 in their previous 6 fixtures in all competitions. They picked up just three points in their last 11 league outing since the first of December. On their own field, Everton are quite the intimidating tea. They’ve been displaying stellar form in their home turf throughout the whole season, and only some top-ranked teams managed to come out unscathed. However, the main concern for Marco Silva’s team is their defense. They only managed to keep 2 clean sheets in 13 fixtures including the one they acquired in their match against Huddersfield on Tuesday. Things won’t be easy for them especially since they will be in front of a Wolves attack that only failed to concede 3 times out of 13.

Meanwhile, the Wolverhampton Wanderers recently recorded their greatest Premier League victory ever since their progression from the Championship league against West Ham on Tuesday, racking up a trio of goals as the final score line against the vulnerable Hammers. The Wolves managed to score in 10 of their previous 12 away fixtures as well as 2 in 3 of their recent fixtures on the road. Nuno Santo’s men have the confidence of being able to come out victorious against titans like Liverpool and Chelsea this season so they might be poised in facing a side like Everton.
